(In a new study) published in Science Journal, researchers have quantified the amount of plastic entering oceans from coastlines of 192 countries. India is 12th in the list of top 20 countries notorious for disbursing the maximum amount of plastic waste into the high seas from their respective coastlines. China ranks first, followed by countries in Southeast Asia, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Nigeria, Bangladesh and South Africa.

Considering that India is largely poor, has a LOT of coastline, and has about a billion people, that is actually pretty impressive.

I used to live in NYC. Brown paper bags were what was used in delis, groceries and supermarkets. Then in the early 70s I started to see orange plastic bags...in Chinatown...nowhere else at first. The next area I spotted them was in an Indian community in Queens. After that, they spread like the plague in many different colors.
