The issue is not box office receipts, but rather media coverage of the film’s release. Although I agree that the word censorship is misapplied here. Boycott, blacklisting, or smear campaign might be more accurate.

What documentaries do get major press coverage?

I'm not talking about being shown on PBS some months after the original release, but reviews and guest appearances on popular shows when the film is being released.

Maybe Michael Moore's. Maybe Morgan Spurlock's. Anybody else's?

So yes, there is some political bias here, but very few documentaries get any real press coverage.

... docs like this preach to the choir.

Who else would go see it? Dinesh tells his audience what it wants to hear. If it's not what somebody already wants to hear, are they really going to be convinced by his approach?
