Only a few authoritarian states require registration of firearms. Those states are California, Hawaii, Maryland, and New York.

I was about to ask why you left New Jersey off the list, but instead searched NJ gun registration. This document came up at the top of the list:

STATE OF NEW JERSEY VOLUNTARY FORM OF FIREARMS REGISTRATION (To register a firearm, all questions must be answered) This is a three-part form Type or press firmly with ball point pen If internet form, make & sign three copies.

So, registration is voluntary! BUT (and it's a big but) to legally purchase a firearm in NJ you must apply for and be issued a permit to purchase. If that ain't registration, what is?

That’s not quite right. In NJ, you need a permit (signed by the local CLEO) for each handgun that you purchase (or receive) from an FFL. So ALL handguns are registered if they are transferred in NJ. Long guns are a different matter - you do need a Firearms Owner ID card to buy one, but those purchases are not supposed to be registered (other than the federal 4473 nonsense).

Take it from me, a (thankfully) ex-resident of that dark and fascist state, that’s the law. Note that I left with about 200 years (in Rahway State Prison) worth of normal capacity magazines nearly 20 years ago...and I have only gone back for occasional visits every few years. I miss some aspects of NJ, but not one thing having to do with firearms.
