You're John McCain, a fallen hero who wanted to become president so desperately that you sold yourself to Charlie Keating, the wealthy con man who bears such an incredible resemblance to The Joker.
Obviously, Keating thought you could make it to the White House, too.
He poured $112,000 into your political campaigns. He became your friend. He threw fund raisers in your honor. He even made a sweet shopping-center investment deal for your wife, Cindy. Your father-in-law, Jim Hensley, was cut in on the deal, too.
Nothing was too good for you. Why not? Keating saw you as a prime investment that would pay off in the future.

Maybe the voters will understand you took those tiring trips to Charlie's place in the Bahamas in their behalf. Certainly, they can understand you wanted to take your family along. A senator deserves to travel on private jets, removed from the awful crush of public transportation.
You sought out a master criminal like Keating and became his friend. Now you've discarded him. It shouldn't be surprising that you are now in the process of selling out your senatorial accomplices.
You're John McCain, clearly the guiltiest, most culpable and reprehensible of the Keating Five. But you know the power of television and you realize this is the only way you can possibly save your political career.

Not punishing people is why we are in the trouble we are. There are never any consequences for negative actions.
That is why we should demand that all political contributions be ANONYMOUS. You can't sell influence if you don't know who is buying. Americans should be permitted to donate any amount they wish to any candidate or party they choose; that's FREEDOM. But purchasing an outcome Is BRIBERY, a CRIME, and should result in prison for donor and donee. And as I previously commented, a strict accounting of the sources should be required of any elected official who becomes wealthy during his term of service.
A few congresscritters, senators and business moguls frogmarched to jail on camera will go a long way towards ensuring that true public SERVANTS hold office, instead of billionaire wannabes.
The fawning adulation of the man is so contrived and nauseating. I cannot think of a single accomplishment he made. Not one. Honestly.
Every coin has two sides. Politicians are the same, they are have two sides. They will lobby you for your vote. then give nothing in return. Look at both sides fairly and decide for yourself if your needs and concerns are being represented or if they served themselves after they got to Washington or wherever you sent them.
So, McCain was a nice guy but what did he accomplish over the years that was in your best interest?
So, he served in Vietnam but so did thousands of others. Even John F Kerry served, he has the wounds to show you. Some gave all so that our representative form of government could continue. Everyday guys like you and me.
I’m for term limits, limited government benefits, and limited financial gain (whether domestic or foreign) for our elected representatives while in office.
How many politicians have resigned due to bankruptcy or conflict of interests while in office, not many lately. How many books have been ghost written, Nobel Peace prizes awarded, paid speeches given, etc. while in office?
It’s all BS and we, the people on both sides of the aisle, know it. So let’s praise McCain, put up a statue, name a street, and carry on. Nothing changes...

The Keating Five were five United States Senators accused of corruption in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger savings and loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The five senators—Alan Cranston (Democrat of California), Dennis DeConcini (Democrat of Arizona), John Glenn (Democrat of Ohio), John McCain (Republican of Arizona), and Donald W. Riegle, Jr. (Democrat of Michigan)—were accused of improperly intervening in 1987 on behalf of Charles H. Keating, Jr., Chairman of the Lincoln Savings and Loan Association, which was the target of a regulatory investigation by the Federal Home Loan Bank Board (FHLBB).
The FHLBB subsequently backed off taking action against Lincoln. Lincoln Savings and Loan collapsed in 1989, at a cost of $3.4 billion to the federal government (and thus taxpayers). Some 23,000 Lincoln bondholders were defrauded and many investors lost their life savings. The substantial political contributions Keating had made to each of the senators, totaling $1.3 million, attracted considerable public and media attention.
After a lengthy investigation, the Senate Ethics Committee determined in 1991 that Cranston, DeConcini, and Riegle had substantially and improperly interfered with the FHLBB's investigation of Lincoln Savings, with Cranston receiving a formal reprimand. Senators Glenn and McCain were cleared of having acted improperly but were criticized for having exercised "poor judgment".
All five senators served out their terms. Only Glenn and McCain ran for re-election, and they both retained their seats. McCain would go on to run for President of the United States twice, and was the Republican Party nominee in 2008.
