I miss the Portland of about 25 years ago.
You may be able to back that up some way, but if an officer has the ability to respond to a felony in progress, and fails to do so, I think that officer should be subject to being fired, and possibly prosecuted. If lives are on the line, all the more so. If someone died because he simply took a pass on helping, I’d consider him as guilty as the person who did the killing.
I sure wouldn’t want to work beside him. He would have just shown me that he could not be counted on if something similar involved me.
Surprisingly this fiasco was covered by the media for weeks.
The Oregonian and TV stations had many stories but Portland is a bastion of libs and they’ll surely keep electing this jerk mayor.
Perhaps so. Not trying to give you a hard time. I’m not sure if that case could be made. It very well could be. I’m just not well enough versed on that concept as it would apply here.
Interesting. Was there any reaction from the locals? I imagine they will side with their lib mayor. The law is an impediment to crazed liberals.
I can’t recall the case, but the ruling stems from an incident where officers were being set up to respond, and were ambushed, or required to go into situations where THEIR lives were in danger.
Warren vs. District of Columbia. Add to that the fact that their boss ordered them to stand down, throw in their union, and they’re pretty well hamstrung, even if they’re gung ho to respond. Think Benghazi.
Your probably right, civil rights only apply to liberal groups.
The city has a pretty new female black police chief they hired from Oakland, CA., Chief Outlaw. I honestly believe if it wasn’t for her this fiasco would still be going on.
It seems after five or so weeks she finally had a long talk with the jerk and said enough is enough, that’s when they told protesters to clear out and the city was left with a huge mess to clean up.
They had some near riots right after that and police were under the gun for injuring a few anarchists. Chief Outlaw came forward and stood up for the department, backed them 100%. Said the criminals are the anarchists, not the police and things finally quieted down.
Solution is Federal Troops next time! Or the US Marshals Service.
I would not make the case they should disregard their personal safety, or an operation they were already involved in that required their attention.
I would only suggest that if they were able to and took a pass, I would expect them to be held to account.
Certainly objecting to helping when they could, simply because a federal agent were taking down illegal aliens and came under fire, would be a gross dereliction of their duty.
Perhaps some loophole would give them cover, but I would consider that to be very misguided.

If my boss had ordered me not to help a fellow employee, and that employee’s life was being threatened, you better believe I would do anything in my power to help that employee.
