A migrant mother and her lawyers allege that substandard care at a detention facility run by Immigration and Customs Enforcement is to blame for her toddlers death six weeks after their release.
Yazmin Juarez, 20, and her 18-month-old daughter, Mariee, came to the U.S. from Guatemala via the Rio Grande, according to CNN. Juarez sought asylum and was detained by ICE agents. She and her child were placed in the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, Texas.
Juarezs lawyers say Mariee contracted a respiratory infection at the center, which "went woefully under-treated for nearly a month." Juarez sought treatment for her daughter and was prescribed medication that her lawyers say did not help her daughter.
Upon their release, Juarez and Mariee flew to New Jersey to be with Juarezs mother. Mariee was then hospitalized for respiratory failure and died six weeks later in Philadelphia, according to CNN.
"A mother lost her little girl because ICE and those running the Dilley immigration prison failed them inexcusably," the law firm told CNN. "We are working with Yazmin and her family to obtain justice for the failures by ICE and others, and to ensure that no other family suffers such a needless and devastating loss."
"ICE is committed to ensuring the welfare of all those in the agency's custody, including providing access to necessary and appropriate medical care. Comprehensive medical care is provided to all individuals in ICE custody, ICE said in a statement to The Hill.
The revelation comes amid increased scrutiny over ICE regarding its role in the Trump administrations zero tolerance policy, which led to the separation of thousands of children from their family at the U.S. southern border.
Abolish ICE has become a rallying cry among the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, but a poll released Monday shows only a quarter of all Democrats actually support eliminating the body.
“Mariee, came to the U.S. from Guatemala via the Rio Grande...”
Yeah...
I would arrest the mother for child abuse and I would make her a prime suspect in the tragic death of her child.
More like her family failed her.
Then dont come to another country illegally
No 18 month old baby has ever, ever died before. And of course, ICE is responsible for providing medical care for any and all illegals with any and all conditions who just show up at the border.
Quite a schlep with an 18 month old kid. I’m sure it didn’t stress the kid at all. RIP.
Mariee’s Dad must be devastated.
.
I don’t believe this. The child was not tended to properly in the SIX weeks the mother and the grandmother had custody.
Wonder if the mother brought the child here knowing she had health problems and expected the child to get treated at taxpayers expense.
Another reason to turn them around at the border and tell them good bye.
Especially traveling with all those other migrants with respiratory diseases.
Lead story on the Cables, anytime now...
To offset the Tibbett’s death, I would imagine.
Also, what was her health like before her mother dragged her through the Rio Grande.
Toddler probably had five strains of cholera when Mommy brought him here.
6 weeks later?? And this is OUR FAULT because??
SIX WEEKS after this illegal alien female and her illegal alien child were released from detention-for-illegal-aliens she claims her child got ill while they were detained...
1. When they were released did she take her child to a doctor ???
2. when did the symptoms start to show up ???
3. she claims the child was ill during detention and yet she is only just now mentioning this ???
4. Since shes not an IMMIGRANT and therefore neither she nor her child was ever medically examined BEFORE she illegally entered the country and BEFORE she was arrested for that crime, there is no proof that the child was not already ill...
5. Every illegal alien gets examined by a doctor during the detention..they get much better care than veterans do...
6. Did she ever tell someone that her child was ill ???
7. who waits SIX WEEKS to mention a young child is ill ???
8. Are the CPS going to take the child into custody due to her neglect ??? They would if this was an American citizen and child...
and so on...
Six weks later. Resporatory infection. Timeline suggests a new infection, that was caught after she went to NJ. And mom may not have sought medical care.
so when was the kid hospitalized? And what was the diagnosis.
I wonder if it is related to the children’s Advil recall.
