WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Canadas top trade negotiator joins her Mexican and U.S. counterparts in Washington on Tuesday in a bid to remain part of a trilateral North American trade pact, as U.S. officials expressed optimism a deal could be reached this week.
Ottawa is under pressure to accept new terms on auto trade and dispute settlement rules after the United States and Mexico agreed on Monday to overhaul the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland rejoins the year-long talks following a hiatus of several weeks as the United States and Mexico ironed out outstanding bilateral disagreements in the renegotiation of the 24-year-old accord.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told CNBC on Tuesday that he believed the United States could also reach a trade deal with Canada this week.
The U.S. market and the Canadian markets are very intertwined, Mnuchin said. Its important for them to get this deal and its important for us to get this deal.
Trump has threatened he still could put tariffs on Canadian-made cars if Canada did not join its neighbors and warned he expected concessions on Canadas dairy protections.

Promise made, promise kept.
Not even close to being tired of winning.
Ooooh Canaduh....
I think Trump will make a deal with Canada. If he could make on with Mexico, he can make one with Canada.
Not bad...
Still more winning...
The Art of the Deal kiddies.
I’ll bet that “Faggot Boy Trudeau” is having a melt down over this. I just don’t know where Canadians dug up this worthless POS?
Pretty sure Canada will sign on this week, just say’n.
Oh that politically obsessed pantywaist will give up Canada’s interests if he has to
Like the Dims, it’s all about him. He has no more loyalty to Canadians than hilLIAR has to Americans
I see the WSJ lumpheads on Cavooootoh are poo-pooing this whole deal as we speak.
Boy Trudeau folds like the cheap suit you typically see him in.
He was probably groomed for the office...in more ways than one.
This would be terrific. The original concept of favoring our neighbors as trading partners was a good one. The problem was that even back when it started we knew it would be used for cheap labor. If President Trump can fix that, FINALLY there might be some upper pressure on wages for lower-tier workers in both Mexico and the US.
I seem to recall a certain Kenyan fellow who resided at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue for eight years. Turd-owe is merely a homegrown, paler shade of jackass.
Magic Wand genius speaks: "
when somebody says, like the person you just mentioned who Im not going to advertise for, that hes going to bring all these jobs back, well how exactly are you going to do that? What are you going to do? Theres theres no answer to it. He just says, 'Well, Im going to negotiate a better deal. Well, how what how exactly are you going to negotiate that? What magic wand do you have? And usually, the answer is he doesnt have an answer."
As a Canadian, this is truly humiliating. Trudeau talked tough and then bluffed with nothing in his hand. President Trump read him perfectly and knew that he just needed to ignore and isolate Canada in the talks, and that they would have no option but to beg for a deal once Mexico had signed on. The world is seeing a master strategist in all his glory.
OH NO, this CAN’T BE HAPPENING! TRUMP MUST BE MADE OUT TO BE BAD! OH NOOOO!
Winners laugh. Losers say, “Deal the cards.”
“I seem to recall a certain Kenyan fellow who resided at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue for eight years. Turd-owe is merely a homegrown, paler shade of jackass.”
You just had to remind us all of that worthless a$$hole didn’t you. Yes, when it comes to stupidity, Canadians have no leg up on Americans. At least though, we do have our Constitution with the Bill of Rights, unlike Canada.
wow! that was quick! the rest of the world is finally realizing Trump doesn’t bluff!
Well he is the son of Pierre Elliott TruDOPE; the man who set Canada on the road to ruin.
Where are all the freepers that were terrified of a trade ‘war’?
We kept trying to tell you that there had been a war for 40 years - but it was all one sided. Once Trump told them that we would start firing back - AMAZING - they all start negotiating.
