Their argument doesn't make any sense. Why would they raise money for him if they didn't think he could handle it?

I've reached the point where there's no charity I give to anymore. And that includes the "Alumni Scholarship Fund" at my college (Hint: one really should check how trustees spend money). I'd rather go "downtown" with some singles, and give someone money for a hot dog or Subway sandwich or an all-day bus pass, if they seem sincere when they ask. If they waste that small amount of money? It's on them and it's an opportunity to make a good choice.

grrr…….

They originally wanted to raise $10,000 to help him out, and they ended up getting $400,000 in donations.

There's got to be more to this story than what is being reported. Apparently the guy lived in a trailer on their property for a while after this saga started.

The story went viral and they wound up with way more money than they ever expected to see. They thought they could manage it for him. What little they did give him, he quickly squandered on drugs.

This couple may have a little dysfunction in their lives as well. She did run out of gas on the interstate. Not exactly a sign of strong financial health. And he likes to gamble.

So on one end you have this couple, overwhelmed with money and suddenly not really excited to part with it and on the other end, you have a drug addict who blows every last dime he has getting high. And in the middle, you have the GoFundMe phenomenon which, as pointed out above, doesn't really have a whole lot of oversight as to how funds are distributed.

My dad did the same thing but in a different way. INCLUDING the church donations. He would ask the church what they needed and then bought the items they needed, whether it was beds for a children's shelter, books or part of the utility bills... he always said, "I just want to make sure the money I give is used for the things I'm told they will be used for.... I just don't trust men with money."
