Congressman Darren Soto won by a landslide, against Alan Grayson, gaining overwhelming support of the large Boricua [Puerto Rican] community in Kissimmee.
But Florida International University researcher, Jorge Duany, said this isnt an indication of what might play out in November.
Many Puerto Ricans who come from the island directly especially the middle [class] are more open to joining the Republican party or becoming independent.
Duany said this is a phenomenon unique to Florida. Its not seen in other states with a large population of Puerto Rican voters like New York and Connecticut
A recent Florida International University poll shows Republican candidate for Senate Rick Scott has a 21 point lead with Puerto Ricans over Democratic incumbent Bill Nelson.
I would add to this, most if not all of my family/friends from PR who have moved to the South recently, will vote Republican. These are mostly GenXers. Puerto Rican baby boomers remain Democrat, but those gravitate to already Democrat states.
So, I don't buy this notion that the massive migration of Puerto Ricans to the mainland after last year's hurricanes will flip battleground states to the blue column. It will be more like a wash, IMHO.
Hope you are right. I think this is true of Cubans also.
Alan Grayson had outlived his political life, was never a viable candidate.
One such acquaintance in the Orlando area, Miguel, moved to an older, almost entirely white neighborhood in Seminole County and became the head of the homeowner association. Not only are the crime and disorder less and the schools better, but Miguel and his wife are determined that their children "will be raised as Americans."
As trendy as it is to cultivate ethnic identity, the tug of assimilation is strong because of the profound attractiveness of American life and values and the freedom and opportunity that the country offers. Those Puerto Ricans inclined that way are more likely to register as Independents or Republicans.
They may say that they will raise their kids as Americans, and they try, but it never fails that they also send their kids during summers to their grandparents on the island, who beat some old world and Catholic values into them and make them practice their Spanish language while they’re at it. :-)
Cubans have always been Republicans. They were sold out by JFK back in the 60’s
So once again, people defy being politically defined by their race.
Cue the stunned looks on MSM faces.
I know. Hence the example.
Yet I know a Puerto Rico born obstetrician in Atlanta with hard line views on immigration and culture. Given a choice, he would make English our sole official language, make PR independent, and build not just a wall but a minefield on the border with Mexico.
Not all or even most Puerto Ricans on the mainland attempt to maintain a connection with the island. Many are scornful of Puerto Rico’s prideful backwardness. My friend Miguel, for example, says that he and his wife are raising their two sons “as Americans.”
It is useful to learn 2 languages and 2 cultures. It has even been shown that this adds a few IQ points to the young as they grow and develop.
