OPINION This is a column about listening.
Its about the millions of people in this country who feel that no one cares what they think or values what they do. People who believe that their voice isnt being heard, especially by the elites in this country, whether in politics, the media, academia or the cultural arena.
Over the past few months, Ive often used comments from voter focus groups in my columns because hearing directly from voters in their words, not mine, gives readers unfiltered insight into what ordinary Americans are thinking and feeling.
So I want to share what two voters, both from competitive states, told us in focus groups the first nearly two years ago; the second just two weeks ago.
One man demonstrated why people have such contempt for elites, telling us:
The elites get their say every day. We get our say once every two years. To me, thats an elite. They override my vote.
Nearly two years later, a second man offered a similar view of the world this way:
No, I dont think my voice is heard at all. I think Im in flyover country. I think if I was in New York or Los Angeles, it would be different. But Im insignificant. And I think thats why Mr. Trumps the president cause theres an awful lot of us insignificant people out here.
Both statements are searing criticisms of the influencer class and a sad commentary on where we are as a country today.

American Hayseeds-Dont you understand who WE are
The elites in New York, Washington and Los Angeles are much more familiar with, and are much more comfortable with their counterparts in Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai, Mumbai, Abu Dhabi, Berlin, Brussels and London than they are with any of us. They attend the same parties, go to the same vacation spots, and their kids attend the same schools. Their kids will be exactly the same way.
Just something to think about.
Elites will always be disconnected from the regular folk (voters). That’s why they’re called “elites”. They’re not the same.
You mean the entrenched swamp establishment of the Republican Party.
You know who you are.
They don’t want to be “connected” to the unwashed masses.
All they want from the “unwashed cattle” is payment of taxes.
And they damn well better be accurate and on time with em, too.
Otherwise, we are nothing to them.
David Winston is the president of The Winston Group and a longtime adviser to congressional Republicans. He previously served as the director of planning for Speaker Newt Gingrich. He advises Fortune 100 companies, foundations, and nonprofit organizations on strategic planning and public policy issues, and is an election analyst for CBS News.
He’s wrong about this. He thinks the elites “don’t understand” what the average American thinks. No, they understand what we think, they just don’t care. They have other more pressing priorities.
They have more money.
Actually the real problem is our ‘elites’ aren’t very ‘elite’...
They’ve picked up fashion differences, maybe some food fad differences, but their ideas are tacky self-serving crap - white trash Hillary stuff with airs... We don’t object to ‘elites’ we object to lowlifes confusing money for true class.
More likely, they care about what the average American thinks as much as the average American cares about what the cows think when they’re munching away at Mickey D’s.
Gripe and complain as we might, all they hear is ‘moo’.
The ‘elites’ in the big urban centers think that they are the elite because their friends told them so and they said the same to their friends. The urban parasite class lives in a bubble and the reckoning for their hubris will be painful. Most revolutions involve people outside urban areas rolling on in and taking control from urban capitals and the second American Revolution will be no different.
The elite will be staining their underwear with latte scented diarrhea while middle class troops March into their cities.
Problem is, 99.5% of the elites don’t care about anybody but them selves.
I thank God on a daily basis for President Trump, a man I truly believe cares for all of us. He has demonstrated this many times.
