(Flashback) Obama proposes two-year pay freeze for federal workers

President Obama on Monday announced a two-year pay freeze for most of the 1.9 million civilians who work for the federal government, as he tried to address concerns over a mushrooming deficit and placate Republicans who have targeted the workforce for big cuts.

"Getting this deficit under control is going to require some broad sacrifices, and that sacrifice must be shared by the employees of the federal government," Obama said in a White House speech. He called federal workers "patriots who love their country" and said the cut is not just "a line item on a federal ledger." But he said he is asking federal workers to sacrifice for the country as "they've always done."

Now that Trump has started the ‘no pay increase’ bandwagon we need to get state and local officials to follow suit.

Government employee salary and benefits are far too high for the work (if any) that they do.

Drain the Swamp at all levels of government.

YES, a new phrase 99’ers became the norm for many of us. Conveniently those who fell off unemployment benefits were no longer counted in the unemployed statistics.

How about no more raises until the federal government wages are similar to the public sector.

Agree, but that should include retirement age and pensions too.

Concur! Getting a Federal job shouldn’t be like getting a ‘Golden Ticket’ for life. They get paid far above the ‘outside’ sector (non-gov work). They get superior health care and get it for life. They get perks like free transportation on car-pool carriers. They receive a job for life. Better work schedules. More days off. Far cushier and don’t have to produce and still get paid. No wonder they believe they are above the non-gov folks.

Yes, I realized after hitting enter.

After SS only getting a quarter to a half percent for four years, last year people got 2%. This year they may get three.

I believe it would be better to focus on privatizing SS and starting that as soon as possible.

You know, twenty years in and you’d be approaching half of Social Security privatized in part. Twenty more an something like 90% would be.

People would be retiring with better incomes and the FedGov would have no more unfunded mandates related to SS or Medicare.
