Read the article.

The fire fighter initially to the dog to the animal shelter, so someone can claim him, but after a few days nobody claimed him, so the shelter called the firefighter and he decided to adopt him.

So he should have not taken the dog and let the animal shelter kill the dog, which they usually do, if a do is not claimed or adopted within a few days.

I guess that would have made you happier, than to know the dog found a good home.
