"It is no secret that Russia seeks any opportunity it can find to drive a wedge between the United States and our Central Asian partners, including Afghanistan," Nicholson added.

Aid to Taliban

U.S. and Afghan officials have previously accused Russia of meddling in Afghanistan by providing Taliban insurgents with both weapons and training.

Moscow has rejected the allegations, saying it has only political ties with the Taliban. Still, Russia has faced growing suspicion from the U.S. and its allies, who say the Kremlin has been increasingly working to expand its influence in Afghanistan and beyond.

I suppose the experts will tell us he's wrong (snicker). BTW, Russia had their own war over there, so I can see them being a bit sensitive about this.

The Russians are building up their Med fleet. We have sent in several missile destroyers as well a a sub with missiles. Iran is building 3 major bases in Syria one near the Golan; also Iran has a massive troop build up in Iraq under Gen Soulimani. The US and Israel have an understanding of mutual aid; The Russians are with Iran trying to counter that initiative.

The Russian-Syrian war is heating up and both the US and Israel may be involved. Looks like a hot war could erupt at any time.

Let the record show it was the Russians who brokered the peace talks and it was the Afghan President who declined at the last minute to sit down with the Taliban and negotiate.

Cry more General Nicholson...

The Taliban will not agree to a ceasefire, so no talks.

“Innocent people are being killed left and right. Bombing, in the middle of children, in the middle of families, bombing, killing all over Afghanistan,” Mr Trump said. “So we don’t want to talk with the Taliban. There may be a time but it’s going to be a long time.”

Let the record show it was the Russians who brokered the peace talks and it was the Afghan President who declined at the last minute to sit down with the Taliban and negotiate. Cry more General Nicholson...

I seem to remember that we did our best to undermine the Soviets when they were in Afghanistan by arming the likes of Osama Bin Laden. I guess they are just returning the favor.

Global interventionists forget that the United States is a third party to negotiations on national reconciliation in Afghanistan...and as such does not set the terms or conditions under which they take place.

If the Afghan government and the insurgent Taliban want to sit down at the table and negotiate, there is f***all the US can do about it.
