You have most of the story correct, but not all.
Carole Shepp McCain was John’s first wife and he was her second husband, having previously been married to a USNA classmate. That marriage produced two sons, Douglas and Andrew, which John formally adopted and together he and Carole had one daughter, Sidney.
While McCain was imprisoned Carole was in a horrid automobile accident which, as you correctly noted, left her disfigured and several inches shorter. Not wanting to add to John’s worries, she and his parents did not inform him of her accident, so upon his release he came home to a different looking Carole.
Carole would later remark that “John was 40 and looking to be 25 again.”
I don’t know if anyone else caught this, but big mouth Joe Biden let it slip during his eulogy that he played a yuge part in facilitating the meeting of McCain and Cindy, when he said (to Cindy remember, I was with Jill) and I said, “John, go talk to her..!” McCain was the military laison for the US Senate and he was accompanying Biden in Hawaii at that function where Cindy and her parents happened to be! Biden KNEW John was a married man!
If you receive HBO, it produced a special titled “John McCain, For Whom The Bell Tolls. It’s all one-sided, (he’s the hero) but Carole’s two sons and Carole herself are featured and the sons speak about the hurt they endured over Cindy and the quick remarriage. Sidney also appears.
Carole and John managed to overcome all the bitterness and became very good friends. I think they talked by telephone very often and I think she was at the private services today at USNA.
I have my own opinion of McCain. My husband was a classmate and personal friend of his back then so he knew him quite well. They were both 17 when they first met.
Thank you.
Real life testimony of events are the best. Unfiltered perspective.
And? Drop the other shoe, dear onyx!
I can imagine the two sleazebags being partners in crime. McCain philandering and Biden looking for prepubescents to fondle on Waikiki Beach.
Great catch, dear onyx.
Excuse me, while I 🤢
