As Paul noted last night, Democrats (and some Republicans) turned John McCains funeral into an orgy of Trump-bashing. Evidently they thought it made political sense. It reminds me of another politicized funeral, 16 years ago.
In the fall of 2002, Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone was running for re-election against Norm Coleman. Tim Pawlenty was running his first race for Governor. And, of course, it was the first midterm election of George W. Bushs presidency. In the last days of the campaign, Wellstones campaign airplane crashed in northern Minnesota, killing Wellstone and a number of others. Former Vice-President Walter Mondale was hurriedly recruited to replace Wellstone on the ticket.
And leading Democrats from around the country assembled in the Twin Cities for Wellstones funeral. The funeral was broadcast live to the nation. To the shock of most who watched, the Democrats turned Wellstones funeral into a partisan hate-fest. Reaction was overwhelmingly negative.
Coleman went on to defeat Mondale handily. Pawlenty won his first term. And nationally, Republicans gained seats in both the House and the Senate. Revulsion against the Democrats politicized funeral was widely credited as a factor in Republicans success.
Will the politicizing of McCains funeral by anti-Trumpers have a similar boomerang effect? Probably not to the same degree; standards have declined considerably since 2002. But it wont help the anti-Trumpers cause, just as similar anti-Trump speeches at Aretha Franklins funeral wont be helpful.
What can we conclude if there is a funeral for Person A, and the eulogies are mostly about Person B? For one thing, Person B is obviously a heck of a lot more important than Person A. John McCain was heroic in some ways, notoriously small-minded in others. It is perhaps a fitting coda to his career that his funeral was mostly about someone else.

Agreed...
Not only someone else but someone else who was specifically not invited (banned) who showed class and decorum when the weasels at the funeral did not. Someone who was not there to defend himself in person by design of the deceased and his funeral planners.
I agree; this will cost the left but then they keep telling people they are small-minded petty vindictive people so is it any wonder the people are hearing them? The people will remember. It is sad that in such a short amount of time (just 16 years) our standards have indeed dropped as a nation. I blame the PC culture on this and a generation that has never known a time without the Internet with its instant gratification and misinformation on tap 24/7. Perhaps we have all been a little spoiled by the Internet as well... At least we seek the truth. Can't say that about the left.
“John McCain was heroic in some ways, notoriously small-minded in others. It is perhaps a fitting coda to his career that his funeral was mostly about someone else.”
Donald Trump is clearly living rent-free inside their heads! They have no vision, they have no strategy, they have no reason for people to want to support them...they all just hate Trump and for many people, that is just getting really old!!
And in this case with a huge help from the RINOs.
The ‘McCain Death Rally’ wasn’t very well received except by radical liberals.
Bring it on, liberal puked.
“Folks, try not to die like John McCain did.”
I would also add, try not to LIVE like John McCain did! He was well-known to be selfish, bitter, and vindictive.
He betrayed his marriage vows, his fellow POWs (and their families), his constituents, his former running mate (who still refuses to say a bad thing about him), his fellow Republicans (with his petty late night thumbs down stunt), and above all else his honor, dignity, and decency as a human being! Given so many more opportunities in his life than most could ever imagine and he squandered all of them.
History will not be kind to the “legacy” of John Sidney McCain III!
Was there a funeral somewhere?
Well said.
“Coleman went on to defeat Mondale handily”
Didn’t everyone ?
Also, I forgot about that plane crash.
Well said. FR really does need a ‘like’ button!
Thanks Twotone...
Good point.
Tip of the hat to Albert King and Booker T!
They’re a vile bunch. It’s disgusting that so many can’t see them for what they are.
It was a lot about his silly daughter being a petulant fat ass know-nothing.
Very well said.....We all have to live with ourselves and not to make others living with us (knowing us) uncomfortable. Odd that democrats never think of that.. They must all have been born minus consciences. Sad that McCain probably never gave a thought to the hatred he’d planted in his own family members. Really sad - what a legacy!
Yup.
Thanks, and I liked what you said too.
Planting hatred in your family to live on after you, is an action that would seem unforgivable.
Some folks here didn’t call him MeCain for nothing.
Win at all costs. Remember that “progressive” means anything goes.
