There will be, in 2020, to fill the seat for McCain’s final two years. In the meantime, owing to the fact that McCain didn’t resign so that the seat could be filled in the 2018 election, it falls to the governor to appoint a replacement to serve until the 2020 election. I have read that the governor will NOT appoint a family member. He said that he would not announce a replacement until after McCain’s funeral, so the clock is running.
