You are assuming the GOPe WANTS to keep the House. What they want is Trump gone, their Chinese paymasters protected from fair trade, and the borders kept wide open forever.

The difference is that in 2016, Hillary was confident that the polls were correct and thought she could coast to the finish line. Trump, on the other hand, fought right through the very end, scraping and clawing for every last vote.
This year, it's the Democrats scraping and clawing for every last vote while Republicans, confident that the polls are again wrong are complacent. "Don't worry about it!" they tell us. "All the polls in 2016 said Hillary would win!"
