I find it interesting that Ohr, who had done cybersecurity for private firms, and Stephen Schmidt, who is the chief information security officer at Amazon Web Services, are ham radio operators.

Such an odd hobby for such sophisticated people.

Because I follow this stuff I am not surprised at all. Going back in time, many of the “phone phreaks” and early computer hackers were hams because that was their introduction to the world of technology. Many of the protocols now widely used on the internet were migrated to amateur radio networks in the early days and many of those developing code were also hams. In fact, what many would call the very first cybersecurity researcher, Dr. Clifford Stoll, who wrote the book “The Cuckoo’s Egg” about a hacker who broke into a computer at the Lawrence Berkley Lab, is a longtime ham, K7TA.
