Having a relationship with a major studio was an advantage for Harry, thanks to the acquisition of Vitagraph by Warner Brothers. This relationship offered Harry a shot at the big time, but it started in a small way. After “Spooney Melodies” and “Merry Melodies,” the latter of which was a knock-off on Disney’s far superior “Silly Symphonies,” the Warner’s animation division turned its attention to a new product line called “Looney Tunes.” This 1932 entry features no plot but a lot of music, in this case Harry’s new hit song for Ed Wynn’s show.

Now it was Harry’s turn to hit the jackpot. In 1932 Warner Brothers brought in choreographer Busby Berkeley from MGM to film a series of musicals. The first was based on a novel that featured a same sex relationship, now turned in the movie into an opposite sex relationship due to the morals of the era. The film featured a group of actors who would dominate the Thirties and Forties. Warner’s brought in Harry Warren and teamed him with Al Dubin, who would become his lyricist for the rest of the decade.

“42ND STREET”

Ruby’s dancing style was known as “buck-and-wing” in that era, although her background was in Irish clog dancing. She wasn’t confident enough to stop looking at her feet when she danced, and she never characterized herself as much of an actress, singer or dancer. Being the early 1930s, this is a minor key song. Filmed before the production code came into being in 1934, the female dancers are showing a lot of – (AHEM! COUGH! COUGH!) – thigh. I’ve always regarded colorized film as historic vandalism, but this is the best clip I could find of this song from the movie. You get a small hint of the complexity of Berkeley’s choreography.

Once a hit movie generated a song, recording artists lined up to record it. Unlike Jerome Kern, Harry had no problem with his songs taking on a life outside the originating venue. If the musicianship behind these three ladies sounds highly professional, it’s because the Dorsey Brothers band is their accompanist.

This is a clip from the 1933 release of the movie. The mention of “Winchell” in the lyrics refers to Walter Winchell, noted newspaper gossip columnist, later narrator of the CBS-TV series “The Untouchables.” Ruby Keeler made a little talent go a long way. Una Merkel and Ginger Rogers, playing girls of – (AHEM! COUGH! COUGH!) – ailing repute, provide their own countervailing version of the lyrics.
