Naomi Osaka, 20 years old, just became the first player from Japan to win a Grand Slam.
Yet rather than cheer Osaka, the crowd, the commentators and US Open officials all expressed shock and grief that Serena Williams lost.
Osaka spent what should have been her victory lap in tears. It had been her childhood dream to make it to the US Open and possibly play against Williams, her idol, in the final.
Its hard to recall a more unsportsmanlike event.
Here was a young girl who pulled off one of the greatest upsets ever, who fought for every point she earned, ashamed.
At the awards ceremony, Osaka covered her face with her black visor and cried. The crowd booed her. Katrina Adams, chairman and president of the USTA, opened the awards ceremony by denigrating the winner and lionizing Williams whose ego, if anything, needs piercing.
Perhaps its not the finish we were looking for today, Adams said, but Serena, you are a champion of all champions. Addressing the crowd, Adams added, This mama is a role model and respected by all.
Thats not likely the case now, not after the world watched as Serena Williams had a series of epic meltdowns on the court, all sparked when the umpire warned her: No coaching from the side. Her coach was making visible hand signals.
...
After her loss, Williamss coach admitted to ESPN that he had, in fact, been coaching from the stands, a code violation. The warning was fair.

Kind of reminds me of the 2016 election.
Yes
Their favorite color lost.
It’s a tough crowd in NYC. I am probably wrong but perhaps they were booing Serena and her behavior rather than Osaka.
Uh, looks like it. She ain’t no John macenroe.
I used to follow tennis, especially the majors, but the Williams sisters cured me of that habit.
The tennis people can be as insane as they want.
The concerning thing is the behavior of the crowd.
These are people who paid an average of $1000/seat for the biggest draw in tennis, the ladies final.
This is your elite class. Guess how many Trump backers were in that lot (vanishingly few). And they booed the young lady who won.
Absolutely ashamed and disgusted at this terrible show of unsportsmanship.
Black people must be catered to at all times. Her opponent was Asian? Doesn’t count as a protected minority. As Han Solo said: “Let the Wookie win.”
Adams must resign.
Once again Serena Williams has to crap all over someone else’s win.
Osaka kicked her @ss.... and ins straight sets!!
Obviously, the Russians interfered with the tournament to make sure Osaka won.
No, the crowd was booing US open officials.
Williams got exactly what she deserved.
She had 2 epic meltdowns.
US OPEN refers to only one thing - the GOLF championship. What’s this thing called “tennis?”
The Williams sisters are the absolute WORST sportswomen in the entire sport. When they lose they always say they didn’t play as well as they could have. When they win they always badmouth the competition or talk about themselves as unbeatable. Serena particularly sucks but her sister was just as bad before she became a below-average player. This is sadly, typical, of her at New York. She previously threatened to “shove this ball down your throat” to a linesman who correctly called her shots out. Much of the booing was, indeed, for her and her actions but her saying “don’t boo” as if the boos were for Osaka was just another example of what a low-class person Serena Williams is.
Serena won’t admit it yet, but it’s probably time for her to retire now, with her head up high. It’s time to pass the baton to the next generation and start coaching.
I heard the Standing Ovation Serena got before the game even started. That’s how Personality Cults act. I thought tennis was different.
Another overachieving Asian taking what rightfully belongs to blacks.
