Florence and Isaac are both great distances from the U.S. at this time. Prepare for the worst, and hope for the best. Be kind to your FRiends and neighbors.

Ominous NHC update at 5:00 PM:

The last reconnaissance fix indicated that the pressure had fallen to about 978 mb with Florence, a drop of about 6 mb in 4 hours.

Florence is forecast to rapidly strengthen to a major hurricane by Monday, and is expected to remain an extremely dangerous major hurricane through Thursday.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 125 miles. Florence is forecast to become larger over the next few days.

Looks like Africa is sending Hurricanes to America like the Bugs in Starship Troopers sent an Asteroid to Buenos Aires.

This has the potential to be an epic disaster. It’s not just the potential of a cat 4 making landfall, but its the stall afterward. Both the GFS and EURO are putting down Harvey like #’s for rainfall over a large area of NC/VA. This is going to cause catastrophic freshwater flooding if this verifies.

I live in Tennessee now but have a history of being where I should not when a hurricane strikes. In August of 1959 we lived in Sumter, S.C., when Gracie made landfall as a Cat 4. We lived in a mobile home outside of Shaw AFB and it blew us over and we had to retreat to the hangar on base. We were then transferred to Yokota AFB, Japan, and lived in the “paddies” when a Typhoon Vera struck in September. It blew a tree through our house and we had to ride it out in one room of the home in 120mph+ winds and rain. Later that year we endured another “Super typhoon” but it wasn't as bad as Vera, being the worst super typhoon in recent Japanese history. In 1967 we were stationed in Del Rio, Texas when Beulah hit and traveled up the Rio Grande and flooded the barren desert there where I was privy to see trees loaded with rattlesnakes in the branches. It flooded the Rio Grande, San Felipe, and much of Del Rio. Since then I have no desire to live where a hurricane can strike even though the remnants of Rita, Katrina, Harvey and others have passed over me here as tropical depressions.

Regardless of what the FEMA response is, the media will bash Trump like they did Bush for not doing enough.

Great thread.

I recently moved back to the SC low country and am reminded of 1964 Hurricane Dora. Had a toddler and a 2 week old baby. Husband overseas so I was living with my mother-in-law on Tybee Island. We went to a motel for a night and returned. The neighbor was astonished and insisted the four of us go with her to her family further inland. What a kind woman and her generous relatives.

Southerners are Christians in good times and bad.

I would not be surprised right now if the storm gets stronger with the next 24 hours, they may order the evacuation of Virginia Tech university in Blacksburg, VA, which could be very hard hit if the forecasts of Florence stalls over the Appalachians become reality.
