Hurricane Florence is a rapidly strengthening major storm with sustained 130 mph winds as it heads toward a potentially devastating landfall in the Southeast U.S. later this week, already prompting evacuation orders on the North Carolina coast.

The National Hurricane Center is warning of “life-threatening” storm surge in the Carolinas and Virginia, as well as “a prolonged and exceptionally heavy rainfall event” in the Southeast and mid-Atlantic.

#23: "Duke Power is not exactly fast"

Duke Power is not the brightest bulb in the box. One time I asked them to transfer my account to a new location. They said they couldn't do that because they had me listed as "deceased". It took two weeks of email, snail mail, and enumerable phone calls to prove I wasn't dead.

The Appalachians usually stop the Rif Raf
Or at least knock it down to a vigorous rain event

I spent 46 years in Seattle. Your post reminded me of there. The cascades stop the clouds coming in off the ocean until they can dump their rain and rise far enough to continue on to eastern Washington, where it is mostly desert.

But the Appalachians are not as high. :)

A friend of mine works for an outfit acquired by Duke Energy.

He said it was a huge leap back 20 years.

>>>loaded with sand

You can rest assured that no Cat 4 hurricane is loaded with sand. It's not possible.

I hate to say it...but these rainfall estimates are going to end up low.

N.Carolina is pig country. Large vats of waste. These will overflow in heavy rains. Throw in coal waste pools as well in the Appalachian mtns. Not gonna be pretty.

Florence? Isn’t that an ante-bellum name associated with Southern plantation slavery?

Nope, not at all.

It’s saturated here - rain will be devastating:
*****************************************
Already saturated ground coupled with new rain from the storm and hurricane force wind equals MANY DOWN TREES.

Global warming. Climate change. Trump. Republicans. Christians. White people. Hillbillys. Certainly they are to blame for flo’s wrath.

Been there, done that. During Ike, the winds blowing through pine trees sounded like a terrifying screech. Real eerie sound.

‘This could stall and build strength, take a turn north and then a sharp left right into DE.’

please don’t say things like that; we’re coming to Dewey week after next, first time in a while...hope there’s a beach left...

It’s saturated here - rain will be devastating:

Here in Corpus Christi I measured 5 inches of rain overnight and now we may be facing a new tropical system coming up from Cancun in a few days with projections of 10-20 inches of additional rain.

Rode out Harvey last August 25th/26th in the house with winds of only 100 mph. The eye came ashore about 20 miles northeast of us and the damage there was devastating. Our damages to the house were from falling trees on the roof and some resultant water damage to the front bedrooms.

The surge from the Laguna Madre came down my street with the remains of numerous boat docks but it didn’t rise to the level of the house fortunately.

A year later and we’re still dealing with the financial fallout. I wouldn’t stay for the next one.
