Former Attorney General Eric Holder on Tuesday blasted President Trump for attacking him in a tweet on Sept. 11.
Trump quoted Fox Business host Lou Dobbs in a tweet earlier Tuesday, writing, “‘ERIC Holder could be running the Justice Department right now and it would be behaving no differently than it is.’ @LouDobbs.”
Holder responded in a tweet that Sept. 11 “is not a day for the usual unhinged Trump politics.”
“This is a day to remember the innocent Americans we lost and the brave first responders who gave their lives,” Holder added. “They’re the best of America and we should honor their sacrifice.”
In a separate tweet, Holder defended the Department of Justice (DOJ) during his tenure, writing that if he were in charge of the department, it would be fighting for issues such as health care and gun control.
“Really?! My DOJ would and did care. And continue to fight for protections for voting rights, health care, climate, LGBTQ rights, gun safety measures, criminal justice reform. Would stand up to Congressional hacks and for the career people at DOJ. Are you and Crazy Louie nuts? TFA,” he wrote.
Former White House aide Omarosa Manigault Newman said on Sunday that some administration staffers would use the hashtag #TFA, referring to the 25th Amendment, when Trump did something “insane” or “unhinged.” The author of an anonymous New York Times op-ed said that Trump’s Cabinet had conversations about invoking the amendment early in his presidency to declare him unfit for office.
Holder, who served as attorney general under President Obama from 2009 to 2015, has often criticized Trump. In July, he said the Trump administration had “brought shame to the nation” with its “zero tolerance” policy at the border that resulted in the separation of thousands of children from their parents.
Trump has frequently attacked the Justice Department and current Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who has drawn the ire of Trump for recusing himself from the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
Trump has also called on the Justice Department to investigate what he claims is bias against him in the agency, pointing to text messages between former FBI agent Peter Strzok and former FBI lawyer Lisa Page.
Trump tweeted Tuesday that the texts reveal a “media leak strategy” to undermine his administration.
"New Strzok-Page texts reveal 'Media Leak Strategy,'" Trump tweeted. "@FoxNews So terrible, and NOTHING is being done at DOJ or FBI — but the world is watching, and they get it completely."
