One of my favorite old actors, Ben Johnson, once said about the same thing. 'There's lots fo great actors in this town, but no one is a better Ben Johnson than me'.
Reynolds was one of those guys that either on the screen or in real life would make you feel like whereever he was, was the place to be. Also, great laugh.
R.I.P Gator
Burt was a flawed individual. Not a nice guy.
If you hear banjo music, paddle faster.
Never got a good vibe from Reynolds. Like he took himself too seriously or something. I recall he got angry on the Carson show one night at someone just joking with him. Just my thoughts.....hope he’s saved though. The last thing the thief on the cross stole was heaven and Christ was happy to let him steal it.
The outtakes from Cannonball are still hilarious. Burt could never keep a straight face with DeLuise around.
Steyn confused the character names of Beatty and Voight, but that’sa minor quibble on an otherwise satisfying commentary.
That ‘love’ scene was a bit much, but the movie was otherwise fantastic. I haven’t gone canoeing since.
That ain’t my department Captain Brittles
I could never take my GF camping after seeing that movie. The 70’s were rough on having fun. Jaws ruined the ocean trip and Deliverance ruined camping.
I actually got to meet Burt Reynolds back in 1970 in Oxnard CA, just south of Ventura. My pal and I had finished a freshman high school football practice, and were riding our bikes past the Oxnard Airport and saw a bunch of cameras and crew working.
So we pulled up, and standing right at the gate to the airport was Burt, chatting with a few of the crew. He was filming a scene for his TV show Dan August, which was very popular at the time and was filmed in and around Oxnardthough ‘Santa Luisa’ was the fictionally-named town in the series.

Anyway, we went over and stood by himI was surprised at how relatively small he was, maybe 59 at most, but well-built and definitely movie star handsome. So he looks over at me and my buddy and says You boys football players? and we said yeah, and he says Well have a great time doing it, I used to do that, wish I still could! He gave us a big Burt Reynolds smile and a nod, shook our hands, and went out to the tarmac to film his next scene.
Man, what a great guy to take the time to say something nice to a couple young star-struck kids, which Ive obviously never forgotten.
