When Christopher Steele was hired to compile his dossier on Donald Trump in 2016, he already had an extensive history of presenting private intelligence analysis to U.S. policymakers. The former British spy had for years been funneling reports on Russia and Ukraine to senior State Department Russia analysts. Materials recently turned over to Congress show that while Steele was giving memos to State he also maintained close ties to the billionaire Russian industrialist Oleg V. Deripaska. Some congressional investigators are thus concerned that his memos may have been a channel of Russian disinformation.
Heres how Steele got his work distributed in the halls of Foggy Bottom, according to those who opened the door for him. During the Ukraine crisis in 2014 and 15, Chris Steele had a number of commercial clients who were asking him for reports on what was going on in Russia, what was going on in Ukraine, what was going on between them, former assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs Victoria Nuland told CBSs Face the Nation in February. Chris had a friend at the State Department, and he offered us that reporting free, so that we could also benefit from it.

Does the fact that those memos were distributed at State for years mean U.S. policy might have been warped by Russian disinformation, as some on Capitol Hill fear? No, says a senior State Department official who was serving at the timebecause the Russia hands werent naïve. Asked about the Russia and Ukraine memos Steele provided to State, the official tells The Weekly Standard, We were not aware of his specific sources but assumed that many of them were close to Putin and were peddling information that was useful to the Kremlin.
The official says the Putinesque spin of the memos led them to take Steeles analysis with more than a grain of salt: There was a huge discount factor for that reason.
This was the reputation Steele had at the upper reaches of State: Among the people who saw his work most frequently and who had the most expertise in Russian issues, the onetime MI6 officer was seen as peddling information that was useful to the Kremlin.
So Steele was working both sides. He was taking money from the Kremlin and the Clinton campaign and providing services to both.
And the FBI spread his disinformation throughout the U.S. government.
People need to be put in prison.
His dossier had all the classic KGB-tradition trademarks.
Either Russian disinformation or self-created fairy tales.
No, more like he was collecting what they custom ordered from him.
No, he wasn’t. The entire operation was DNC, FBI, CIA, and British intel. The only people saying Russia did anything are the DNC and the Intel agencies that were part of the conspiracy with Hillary.
This story gives cover to steele, as though he was passing on something he believed was legitimate. The entire thing was fake, and he knew it was because he was in on the creation of it.
Seems like the trillion or so we spent on "Intelligence" gathering from the sixties to the nineties without having a clue the Soviet Union was ready to collapse would have taught people a lesson. But, no, just claim they never really collapsed, blah, blah, blah.
Steele was in good with every anti-Putin oligarch and stayed in touch with the ones who fled prosecution or were deported. The Russian BS was the typical democrat approach, accuse someone else of doing what you yourself were doing and paint all parties involved as horrible for daring to do such a thing.
The Steele stuff is at least 50% successful for the democrats. Painting Russia as now being no different than when it was under the thumb of Communists and Putin as being just like Stalin is a major win for them even if they can't go the distance and convince anyone that Trump was "colluding" with evil Russia.
Democrats will portray Russia being the most horrible nation on earth right up until they win another Presidential election. At that time, they'll applaud how whoever is in charge in Russia at the time has "seen the light" and how great US/Russia relations can become.
They've run that stupid scam a dozen times since the fifties either when the White House changed hands or when a President appointed a Secretary of State the democrat fascist scum couldn't control and didn't agree with.
But, like a cat that keeps chasing the dot a laser pointer makes no matter how many time the cat runs full speed into a wall, some people fall for the same scam, presented in the exact same terms, with all the same lies being promoted, no matter how many times they end up getting it in the butt after democrats sway them and their fellow idiots with scare quotes and BS.
So, who has WMDs this week?
What evil viper is hiding in a cave in Afghanistan this week?
Which horrible Republican said something nasty about queers this week?
Which nation run by and populated mostly by White Christians should have a dose of US hate this week?
Maybe someone who is still in their teens or early twenties hasn't caught on yet, but I've been around long enough to recognize two thirds of what passes for "news" and "insightful commentary" for what it is; the Same Old Sh?t on a different shingle.
“This story gives cover to steele, as though he was passing on something he believed was legitimate. The entire thing was fake, and he knew it was because he was in on the creation of it.”
I also believe that the entire story was fake.
What the article says is that Steele was working both sides.
The article does not give cover to Steele.
Steele was being paid by both the Kremlin and the Clinton campaign. Steele knew everything was phony but he did not care.

Anyone ever bother to think that IF this super-secret Brit badass spy was ever anything at all, all of his contacts in Russia have been put down a long time ago? And if they weren’t, why not?
Eric Felten/Weekly Standard/Bill Kristol - FakeNews.
Nice rant...never understood why people fall for the same bs about Russia over and over again, but it works more often than not.
Starting with the Baby Boomers government schools, excuse me, public schools, have worked hard to train everyone not to stand for something so naturally they'll fall for anything.
Sad, but once you actually think about how massive the machinery in place to achieve that result is it's not surprising
