Trump administration cuts refugee numbers

The Trump administration plans to admit a maximum of only 30,000 refugees in 2019. Although this would be the lowest refugee cap in U.S. history, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, when making the announcement at the State Department Monday afternoon, called the new figures "expansive." He added that they should "not be viewed in isolation" because the U.S. is the world's most generous nation when it comes to humanitarian assistance.

Pompeo suggested that maintaining that high level of U.S. humanitarian assistance was related to the new cap, which he also said "serves the national security interests" of the US.

The Trump administration has long said that it would need to move resources to address the backlog in asylum seekers, and Pompeo referenced this, calling it a "daunting challenge." He said there are over 800,000 asylum cases pending. In 2019 the U.S. plans to process 280,000 asylum seekers.

The vetting process for refugees is extensive. It generally takes 18-24 months, and there are many layers. Despite the long vetting, Pompeo believes the system under the Obama administration was "defective." And he cited the example of a border crosser affiliated with ISIS who had made it through the asylum process.

With humanitarian crises worldwide – in places like Syria, Yemen, South Sudan and Myanmar – there are currently unprecedented refugee flows, which are expected to continue next year. That means this shrinking of the U.S. refugee admittance number is a major blow to many refugee organizations....

It should be JUST South Africans of a certain type and NO others.

30,000 is still too high.

I think it should be zero, regardless if they are white or whatever you like more, and let other nations thousands of miles closer take people in.

For one thing, REAL refugees, and not invaders coming under the guise of a Trojan horse, warriors hidden in their midst.

No matter how bad things in your home country are, try adjacent countries first, as is the instance of Venezuela. The neighboring countries do not have the language barrier that the United States presents, and the trip back home, after the crisis in human tragedy is past, is much easier.

The scams over! Catholic Charities & all the rest have been collecting upwards of $31,000 per head to ‘resettle’ the incoming.

Someday, I hope the President starts a homeland reunification program that helps these people go back and be part of the rebuilding of their homelands. Turning $hitholes(Dick Durban’s favorite word) into centers of prosperity.

If the maximum number of “refugees” is to be 30,000, I assume the actual number could be far lower, theoretically down to zero.

I think at a minimum there should be a hard and fast rule not to bring people in from half way around the world, when they would be much better integrated into a neighboring country with a similar culture.

In other words, let throat cutters who are “refugee” candidates be taken in by a neighboring country populated by fellow throat cutters.

It should be 0. Homeland, ICE and BP need to focus on showing the millions who are here illegally and over stayed their welcome the door. Until every last one is gone, we shouldn’t let any more in.

Catholic Charities has become an arm of the US government. Taxpayers keep the 'holy' people flush with cash... US taxpayers are 'catholic' whether we want to be or NOT.

Research that one. I bet the federal government has shifted millions of dollars per year to Catholic Charities and all the rest on that list.

They use them as front groups and whomever is running them is getting mega rich.
