Hurricane Florence has drenched eastern North Carolina with more than 30 inches of rain, an all-time record for the state.
Last year, Hurricane Maria ravaged the island of Puerto Rico and caused, according to an independent study, nearly 3,000 deaths.
Welcome to the new normal.
Tropical cyclones are nothing new, of course. But climate scientists say that global warming should make such storms wetter, slower and more intense which is exactly what seems to be happening. And if we fail to act, these kinds of devastating weather events will likely become even more frequent and more severe.
Every human being on the planet has a stake in what governments do to limit and adapt to climate change, including those who, like President Trump, prefer to believe global warming is some kind of hoax.
At the very least, we should be trying to reduce carbon emissions and keep global warming to a manageable level. With the landmark Paris Agreement, the nations of the world agreed to try. But Trump foolishly pulled the United States - the worlds second-biggest emitter of carbon dioxide, behind only China - out of the deal.
The administration has already proposed weakening restrictions on carbon emissions from automobiles and coal-fired power plants. And last week, there were reports that the administration also wants to loosen rules governing the release of methane, which traps even more heat than carbon dioxide.
Climate change is no longer theoretical. It is real, it is all around us, and it is going to get much worse.

Throw everything everyone ever knew about the climate out! We now know the real truth. The climate never changed before 1800 AD. Ever!
Ban volcanic eruptions, sunspots and tectonic plate shifting and the endless stream of unqualified idiots on steroids preaching about climate change and feeeel goood about doing so.
And if we were experiencing drier, faster, and more intense, that, too, would be the mantra of the purveyors of disinformation, very few of whom know a damned thing about climatology and atmospheric science.
For modern-day Chicken-Littles, the very essence of scientific CERTAINTY is: “,,,seems to be happening...”
Weather is not climate.
Go ahead Eugene. Stop the sun with your band of global warming hoaxers.
We’ve never had serious hurricanes in that region before, ever!
No worry. Soon someone will receive the order in a dream to build the Ark.
“Last year, Hurricane Maria ravaged the island of Puerto Rico and caused, according to an independent study, nearly 3,000 deaths.”
How about we go back and recompute death statistics for 9/11 the same way the hurricane deaths were computed for Puerto Rico. Maybe when we point out that 50,000 to 100,000 people have died due to direct or aftermath results of 9/11 alone (using this Puerto Rico filter these genius propagandists devised), we can take Koranimals a bit more seriously than we are now.
Another note ... I can’t believe a hurricane “ravaged” an island in the Caribbean!!! I’ve never heard of that! Same thing with that hurricane that smashed into Cudjoe Key last year! Wow! A hurricane hitting the Florida Keys! Where is the historical record of this happening??? It must be CLIMATE CHANGE (f.k.a. global warming; f.f.k.a. global cooling)
Well... he’s right.
The climate does change. Who knew?
Oh, the kind of change man “causes”.
The climate has been changing for thousands of years. During those years man had at best discovered fire and the wheel.
What caused climate change then, is causing climate change now
Eugene Robinson is a liberal nutcase and is totally unqualified to write a newspaper column much less to opine on any aspect of science. The climate may get worse or it may get better, depending on the whims of Earth's chaotic natural processes. Any idiot who believes today's climate is "normal" is too ignorant of the facts to have a credible opinion.
Silly me, I never knew WP opinion writers also are scientists...
What a dummie...er...journalist (same thing).
Of course climate change is not a theory. It has always changed and always will change.
It’s human caused climate change that’s the debate dumb*ss.
And elliptical orbits.
True, it is a sacrament in the church of liberalism.
Yep capt obvious; the climate has continually changed throughout the history of this planet. I think you will find it has done so on many other planets in our solar system as well.
Of course this low level of writing is standard for the WaPo group.
