Sesame Workshop says Bert and Ernie are 'best friends' and not gay
BBC News ^ | 18th September 2018 | BBC News

The organisation behind Sesame Street has denied co-habiting duo, Bert and Ernie, are gay, following comments by one of the show's writers.

Mark Saltzman said his writing about the room-mating couple was based on his relationship with film editor Arnold Glassman.

Sesame Workshop then issued a statement saying the pair "do not have a sexual orientation".

Bert and Ernie may look human, but the pair "remain puppets", it said.

"They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves."

It broadly repeats past statements the non-profit organisation has made about the stripy-clothed duo when questions arose about their relationship.

Mr Saltzman made his assertion about the two in an interview with LGBTQ news site Queerty.

"I always felt that, without a huge agenda, when I was writing Bert and Ernie, they were [a couple]," he said.

Mr Saltzman joined the show in 1984, 15 years after the pair debuted on the show.

"I don't think I'd know how else to write them, but as a loving couple."

There has been decades of speculation about the puppet pair, who have been roommates - albeit in separate beds - at 123 Sesame Street since the programme's pilot episode in 1969.

Bert and Ernie have become icons in the gay community over the years, and even inspired parts of the puppet Broadway musical Avenue Q.

The New Yorker ran a cover image of the pair watching television in each other's arms in July 2013, entitled "Moment of Joy".

Does anyone scream ‘First World problem’ more than heated discussions and multiple news articles about the sexuality of some puppets from a show made for literal preschoolers?

And people make some issue about Puppets? Why? Look, there’s probably already some R-Rated puppet show out there for those people who have sick fantasies about Puppets.

is the first world problem the initial article that they are ghey or the backlash against it?

It’s like the argument used against so-called “bathroom bills”. Aren’t there more important things than putting men with penises into locker rooms and dressing rooms with women and girls? the bills are an attempt to set things back as they were.

Lie down and take it, you mean?

The musical “Avenue Q” is quite good. It (deservedly) won the Tony Award for best musical of 2004.

Good.

As much as Sesame currently has a definite agenda, I have NEVER seen anything that means “homo” about this, back in the day when it was a better show.

People who think this are obsessed with sex, and I would hope a children’s show would not broach ANY sexual suggestion, never mind homo.

Liberals can’t seem to grasp the concept of a normal, friendship between straight men - even the ridiculous term “bromance” is a reflection of the fact that they project sex onto every relationship.
