I used to have a Husky...more than once an opossum got into our fence, only to be nearly instantly killed by the husky. It also killed a bird once. It was actually a very friendly dog towards people, and even very submissive towards my neighbor’s Great Dane, but it seemed to think killing much smaller animals was a game. Hate to say it, but this dog was probably ‘playing’. For comparison, I’ve had dogs that killed squirrels, and they would carry them in their mouths to me - to show off I guess. The Husky, on the other hand, as soon as it kills an animal, it just moves on. It isn’t killing to impress the alpha, or to eat...its just playing.

Its called ‘prey instinct’ and most dogs have it.. Even miniature poodles.

Lots of predatory animals kill for fun.

There is nothing unusual about this.

In nature, they do not have the opportunity very often.

I should hope so.

Huskies killing smaller animals is a known trait of the breed. They’ll even kill another pet of the owner w/o warning. I had one once. Never again.

I had a shepherd who killed one of my year old hens. I was surprised he did this because he knew the hens from when they were chicks. As I watched him kill the hen (I was too far to stop it) I noticed that he was "playing" with her as if she was a squeak toy then lost interest when she squeaked no more.

Could be that this husky thought those birds were squeak toys that move... till they didn't.

My friend’s husky killed a whole family of possums that tried to sneak through its yard.
