Kavanaugh has to be seated before the end of this month in order to be seated for the next coming court. That is why the delay is bad. Before the midterms is not good enough.
others have posted similar, most likely (like Gorsuch) he would only miss out on voting for cases where he missed oral arguments> i think he can start during session at any time.
