During the 20th century the Neronic cross or pentagram became the symbol for the "peace" movement. It was the arch-communist Bertrand Russell who adapted the sinister Neronic cross as the now famous peace symbol because he himself was a determined enemy of Jesus Christ and Christianity.

I was told (at the time our hippies started using it) that it was an upside/down broken cross, since hippies were done with Christianity.
I thought (perhaps in error) that it came from semaphore signals for the letters “n” and “d”, for “nuclear disarm”
But it does resemble a broken cross.
Supposedly this comes from a John Birch pamphlet from years ago.
I was under the impression the “peace symbol” was merely the footprint of the American Chicken, the most deadly predator in the world.
