~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Fort Jackson, South Carolina

jackson2

Fort Jackson is a United States Army installation, which TRADOC operates on for Basic Combat Training (BCT), and is located within the city of Columbia, South Carolina. This installation is named for Andrew Jackson, a United States Army General and seventh President of the United States of America (1829–1837) who was born in the border region of North and South Carolina.

Fort Jackson is the largest and most active initial entry training center in the U.S. Army, training 50 percent of all soldiers and 60 percent of the women entering the Army each year. Providing the Army with new soldiers is the post's primary mission.

35,000 potential soldiers attend basic training and 8,000 advanced individual training soldiers train at Fort Jackson annually. Soldiers who have trained or worked at Fort Jackson live by the base's motto, "Victory Starts Here." The training is provided by the 165th, and 193rd Infantry Brigades Monday through Sunday for a ten-week period.

jackson5

The post has other missions as well. While some military installations have experienced downsizing and closure in past years, Fort Jackson has added several new schools and training institutions since 1995 including the U.S. Army Soldier Support Institute, the Department of Defense Chaplain Center and School, and the National Center for Credibility Assessment, part of the Defense Intelligence Agency.

In 2007 the Army consolidated all of its training facilities for drill sergeants at Fort Jackson, and in 2009 Command Sergeant Major Teresa King became the first woman to head what is now the sole drill sergeant school for the U.S. Army.

jackson4

Fort Jackson encompasses more than 52,000 acres of land, including 100 ranges and field training sites and more than 1,000 buildings. Soldiers, civilians, retirees and family members make up the Fort Jackson community that continues to grow in numbers and facilities.

An additional 10,000 soldiers attend courses at the Soldier Support Institute, Chaplain Center and School and Drill Sergeant School annually. 12,000 military families make Fort Jackson their home. Close to 3,500 civilians are employed at Fort Jackson and 46,000-plus retirees and their families receive services from this base.

Howdy, radu!

Hope today was a good one...and that it was cooler. It’s warmed up here but will do a major cool-down on Wednesday. Looking forward to THAT!

my wife went to Basic Training there in ‘80. Her words “I loved it!”

I personally did Basic at Fort Leonard Wood in ‘86 and if I never come within 100 miles of that place again I will be very thankful.

You’re still here! YAY! I was afraid I’d missed you.

News today makes the brain spin! And since I could keep up a little at a time during the day, I’m trying to catch up now. Almost too much for my poor ol’ pea brain. LOL

Hangin’ in there here at the farm, doing what I can to keep all the kittehs in line. Not an easy task. LOL

Where are you home from? I’d heard you were off somewhere but never caught where. Work or fun this time?

Mmmmm, beautiful weather sounds nice! It’s cooled off a little here but it’s been cloudy and wet.

Kittehs aren’t behaving too much right now because they feel the full moon a-comin’. It’s a tiny bit less crazy tonight because Suvi isn’t here to keep things stirred up. She’s spending the night at the vet clinic so she’ll be there first thing to be spayed in the morning.

I’ll pick her up tomorrow afternoon after I have my knee re-checked by the dr.

Howdy, LUV!

It got a little warm this afternoon but rain moved back in and cooled things down. Wish we could get the major cool-down y’all are going to enjoy. The front is just sitting on us over here. But upper 70s to mid 80s are still better than 90s! We’ll take it.

Following one of my kiddos around for months, LOL! A total vacation, and a trip of a lifetime for sure. Was in England, Scotland, France, Italy, and Asheville, North Carolina.

So glad to be home.

Cat herdin’ is a challenging task for sure!
