Full title: Dunkin' Donuts is dropping the 'Donuts' from its name, despite the fact it helped invent the word 'donut'

Dunkin' Donuts is dropping the "Donuts" from its name.

On Tuesday the chain announced that in January it would officially change its name to simply "Dunkin'." Tests of the shortened name over the past year have inspired backlash, but apparently did little to persuade executives not to make the change official.

The decision is especially notable because Dunkin' Donuts played a crucial role in putting the word "donut" in the dictionary.

Dunkin' Donuts and Mister Donut, two chains founded by brothers-in-law in the mid-1950s, are some of the first known uses of the term "donut" as opposed to the traditional "doughnut."

The IHOP thing was just a planned one day ad campaign. It did it’s job.

Lazy millennial marketing, probably.

If the name is accepted, they’re clever and hip.

If the name is rejected, they can claim ‘We heard you’ and restore it.

In either case they will demand free PR from the media - and probably get it.

Why???

Are they wanting to deemphasize donuts? Do they think some people think they only have donuts, and want you to know they have other things too?

For example, we all know Burger King has items other than burgers, international house of pancakes doesn’t just have pancakes, Pizza hut doesn’t just have pizza.

Strange move.

They do it so investors can short the company, then when the company announces they are going back to the full name, the investors will invest again-
