President Trump renewed his attacks on Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) on Saturday for past statements about his military service during the Vietnam War.
The president wrote Saturday that Blumenthal, who has represented the state since 2011, "must talk" about his past statements concerning what Trump called his "fraudulent service in Vietnam."
"[F]or 12 years he told the people of Connecticut, as their Attorney General, that he was a great Marine War Hero," the president wrote Saturday afternoon.
"Talked about his many battles of near death, but was never in Vietnam. Total Phony!" Trump added in the tweet.
Blumenthal's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Hill on Saturday regarding the president's tweet.
There's no evidence Blumenthal ever claimed to be in "battle" during the Vietnam War, but The New York Times has in the past cited numerous false statements made by the senior Connecticut senator dating back to his days as the state's attorney general. Blumenthal obtained at least five military deferments, according to the Times, before serving in the United State Marine Corps Reserve.
Blumenthal's characterization of his own service has differed in the past. In some statements he claimed to have served "during the Vietnam era," while other statements are less ambiguous including one statement in 2008 in which he said that he "served in Vietnam," according to the Times.
Trump has previously criticized Blumenthal for his his statements about his military service.
The president's tweet came following an attack from Sen Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) during Thursday's hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee to address sexual misconduct claims against Brett Kavanaugh, Trump's Supreme Court nominee.
"@SenBlumenthal lied for years about serving in Vietnam, which is all you need to know about his courage & honesty," Cotton, who is not on the committee, tweeted. "Maybe he should reconsider before questioning Judge Kavanaughs credibility."
WHY wasn’t Senator Cadaver punished for his Stolen Valor??? The BAD people of Conn REWARDED him!!
After Joe Biden left, Blumenthal became the smarmiest, fakest Senator there is.
Just another lying piece of s**t Democrat.
He needs to RESIGN.
Battle on Kav is a dress-rehearsal for Impeachment:
Trump loses NOTHING by doing this.
I hope he does it much, much more.
He could lay off 100% and they would STILL launch everything they had to impeach him.
Stay the course, DJT.
bloomenthal looks like the bastard offspring of a weasel and a snake.
The vile and loathsome blumenthal belongs in prison. A more disgusting, slimy, unethical POS cannot be found. He equals diane feinstein for sneakiness, dirtbaggerry, and pure human filth.
He should also point out Booker’s hypocrisy as a self-admitted groper...By Booker’s own standards he should immediately resign his Senate seat and withdraw from public life
Spit*
The President was being restrained. Blumenthal is among the lowest of the low. And those who voted for him despite knowing of his war lies are just as contemptible.
That’s a face looking for a right cross
Trump shows no sign of backing down—
Crooked Hillary
Mad Maxine
Pocahantas Warren
and now Phony Vietnam Hero Blumenthal
And I have probably missed some.
The Democrats reply to this will be that Booker is elected by the people and is not serving a lifetime appointment. Some schmuck on Tucker Carlson last night was making the same argument. So based on that argument, no one should complain about Trump’s Behavior as being unpresidential.
Falsus in uno, falsus in omnibus.
The sheer chutzpah of a guy who pretended to a Vietnam vet hitting K with his ‘falsus in uno’ crap. Psychopath.
My liberal sister used to sneer that I was the only one in the family stupid enough to enlist and fight in VN.
Draft dodging is honorable among treasonous liberals.
LOL.
