Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has reportedly reached a settlement with the Securities and Exchange Commission after his abandoned attempt to the company private.

As a result of the settlement, which is still subject to court approval, Musk will have to step down from his role as chairman for at least three years and pay a civil penalty of $20 million, CNBC reported Saturday. Tesla will also have to pay a $20 million if the settlement is approved.

“He was royally shafted though.”

He certainly was.

I actually switched from ChemE to EE after learning and reading about Nikola Tesla. I have around a dozen books on, or by, him.

I agree. I think he said he was going to line up a Saudi partner.

It was a stupid and expensive thing to do.

Without Musk leading the company, how long do you assume the company will last?

When listening to a well respected financial analyst and guest on a local radio station state that without Musk, it wouldn’t surprise him if Tesla stock dropped 90% over the coming period.

Who would drive the company like Musk did? Who would be the visionary with a cult like following to keep the money rolling in even though they are loosing money on every car?

Yes, he’s a fascinating individual. So sad he had to go out like he did.

He may have forgotten more about electricity than we ever knew. (collectively)

Nope, but the Tesla Reddit forum would be a good place to ask or do research.

Thanks, so far I’ve found that battery life isn’t everything. A big issue is range decrease rates. And Tesla does pretty well, at least with the Model S.

Put that together with the fact that most Teslas are driven low miles per year and they shine in urban situations.

A 300 mile range on a Tesla S becomes a 276 mile range after about 130k miles. No big deal in a low mileage per urban car.

I can’t find a provision in the Constitution which suspends the 1st amendment for chairmen of publicly traded corporations.

“Q: Were DeLorean’s cars subsidized by federal taxpayers? Just curious.”

Of course not.

Is the subsidy your excuse for why Tesla has outsold DeLorean’s entire production by a multiple of 30?

Couldn’t possibly be that it’s a much better car than the DeLorean was. There’s a reason why Teslas are daily drivers and DeLoreans are pampered garage pets.

The Tesla owners I know have owned Porsches, Range Rovers, Lexus, Mercedes, Escalades all sorts of very expensive cars. They buy what they want and like. They aren’t exactly price conscious. They love these Model S cars and never once have I heard them say it’s because of price.

How many would have been manufactured/sold without the subsidy?

You tell me if you know. You don’t, any more than I do.

I do know that the owners I know would have spent the difference. They have the money and they wanted the cars.

Not all owners would or could, but it’s already an expensive car appealing to a wealthier clientele. They are weighing the Tesla against other luxury cars. They aren’t buying it based on what the monthly car payment is going to be.

Prius buyers want something that makes them feel all environmental. Tesla S buyers want something that can pin you to the seat and leave everything burning gas in the rearview mirror.

...Boeing gets more subsidies than anyone else. GM and Ford get more than Tesla...

You notice he is keeping SpaceX, which is a lot more important to the US position in the world that a few toy cars.

I never worked for Boeing, but I did work for Lockheed. Very similar level of subsidy.

There is an eternal truth about defense spending. You can pay now, in gold. Or you can pay later -- in blood.

I drive a diesel 4WD F-250. My best friend drives a 4WD diesel Chevy 2500. We rib each other a little bit about Ford vs. Chevy.

In our world, the value of a vehicle is measured in its lifetime accomplishment in dragging elk carcasses (dozens) out of the woods. And how high the brush we can drive it through might be -- 6' is a good starting point.

The Tesla is a battery powered toy. I drive mine 500 miles, fill it up in 20 minutes and it is ready to go again. When you get to the end of the pavement, the Tesla might go 200 yards.

Indeed, we do not have enough Lithium on Earth to sustain much more than a few million Tesla drivers. This thing is a joke

“Sounds like a government subsidized cult.”

That meme has only got a little more than a year left in it.

The federal tax credit is based on production numbers and it began phasing out with car #200,000.

It’s $7500 now, $3750 for the first half of 2019, $1875 after that and it ends with 2019.

And be sure to send your thanks to Dubya for signing the Energy Improvement And Extension Act that created it.
