Amid the golden hills near Point Reyes, California, in the sunlit main hall of the Spirit Rock Meditation Center, Christiana Figueres, the architect of the Paris climate agreement, is explaining how Buddhism saved her life.
Her talk is part of a daylong gathering of activists, yoga instructors, Buddhist practitioners, and meditation enthusiasts all intent on bringing more mindfulness and loving kindness to their approach to climate activism. Timed to coincide with the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco hosted by Governor Jerry Brown, Saturday's retreat is about an hour's drive from the city - and a world away.
The day's featured speakers at this famed meditation retreat include climate diplomats like Figueres, the former head of United Nations climate negotiations in Paris, but also Tibetan-Buddhist scholars and activists like Julia Butterfly Hill, the woman who lived in a redwood tree for 738 days to keep it from being cut down.
Figueres is in the middle of explaining how, a few years ago, when she was working on the pathway to Paris, she experienced the most difficult personal trauma of her life. "I thought, 'I wonder what would happen if I just disappeared at this point,'" she tells the seated crowd of shoe-less climate activists.
Under the right conditions, mindfulness can reduce pain, help manage stress, ward off depression, and slow down or even reverse neurodegeneration.
Can it help solve climate change though? That null hypothesis has yet to be disproven.
But Figueres, for her part, thinks it is a crucial tooland not just as a balm for the people who, like her, run high-level climate talks.
"The Paris Agreement is not about me," she says. "It's about the emergence of this true love and solidarity and recognition that we're all here together."

Climate change is real!!!!
It was hot this summer in NY!!!!
And I bet it’s cold this winter!!!
Are you blind?!!?!?!?!?
Climate change hysteria is rooted in nature worship, which is rooted in paganism, which is rooted in Satanism.
So now the Left is trying to politicize meditation? We live in a totalitarian wannabe society.
U.N. climate chief Christina Figueres candidly remarked, the true aim of the recent Paris climate conference was to change the [capitalist] economic development model that has been reigning for at least 150 years, since the Industrial Revolution.
hahahahahahaha!
.....Can Buddhism Help Fight Climate Change?.....
No.
Have these people ever read the Buddhist text?
Buddhism doesn’t believe anything is real. It seeks absolute nothingness. If it isn’t real it doesn’t matter.
This b**ch sometime ago admitted that the “climate change” hysteria was all about getting rid of capitalism.
Maybe those shaolin guys like Kwai Chang Caine could help
There is nothing wrong with loving God’s natural creations. It’s not Satanism. There are words in the Bible about this. God is the First and most extreme of radical environmentalists.
But there is a problem with being so radical and extreme that you would rather help make man go completely extinct as a species rather than let them live in compromise with it or enjoy it.
"U.N. climate chief Christina Figueres candidly remarked, the true aim of the recent Paris climate conference was “to change the [capitalist] economic development model that has been reigning for at least 150 years, since the Industrial Revolution.”
Capitalism has produced jobs, wealth, and prosperity for the common citizen never before seen in history. What has socialism produced? Totalitarian governance, high unemployment, economic stagnation, national bankruptcy, misery.
Well then, it seems the job at hand for the Marxist scammers is how to convince a people who are basically comfortable and generally happy living in a capitalist society that their life sucks and that a change is needed. How do they go about this? They need the people to feel agitated, worried, frightened, anxious and fearful.
Instigating racial tensions, creating guilt syndromes in the minds of people about the capitalist "excesses" that fuel their comfortable lifestyles, inventing catastrophic global scenarios that can only be addressed by fundamental change in government. Lying, deceiving and inciting. Those are the principles of Marxism.
