No kinetic act of war right before the midterms?

In the old days the US captain was pursuing proper strategy in that he would cross the Chinese vessel’s T off the stern and fire a full broadside. Today I suppose that strategy is not all that important tactically but maybe important psychologically.

They can’t, only if they were allowed to on purpose.

Nothing NEW, just a new ‘player’

The Russkies and USN played ‘chicken of the sea’ on a (sort of) regular basis, using their trawlers to interfere with day to day ops.

After I had left, that LST I was on played chicken with a Russian freighter on the open seas.

Just another day at the office to go along with the typhoons, reckless Japanese fishing craft, small boats in Hong Kong Harbor, just ‘waiting’ to get hit by one of ‘Unka Sugahs’ fine craft, just to get the big ‘payday’.

What do you think?

Freepers,

Support our Navy, boycott all thinks from China.

Since we are not at war, the navy cannot fire first, but we can sure teach them a financial lesson!

I’ve feared that same thought for the last 3 years or so. These are dangerous times.

USA — this is your last chance! You are on your own from now on!!

That's what I'm afraid of.

We’ll be going toe-to-toe with these Red a$$holes soon.

They’ll probably come parachuting in while we’re fighting their pals in the civil war.

“Obama DID cede them the entire S. China sea.”

Don’t forget Diane Fecalstain and hubby have been Red Chinese operatives for decades. She even had a Red Chinese driver on her payroll for 20 years. Not mention the Clintons...

Not sure what yo are suggesting. A PLAN ship gets close to a USN vessel by maneuvering into its course. A ship sailing in international waters has certain rights, a warship even more.

5 NM is close quarters battle for warship. Any warship with anti-ship missiles at 50, 100 or even 500 miles is a threat, system dependent; so what is your point?

What we do not want is any nation to dictate where and when our naval vessels may sail, within international laws and rules of the sea. I am sure that our diplomats will be protesting and complaining, its what is done. Until someone actually conducts an act of war, the Decatur, in this case, did what it was supposed to do. Sail past disputed land, force the Chinese to react, then insure the safety of the ship and crew by seamanship or warfare if required....

Pretty sure the Decatur was not alone- the PLAN vessel was probably passively locked by other surface/subsurface and or airborne systems. We don’t fight “oneseys”.

But then this would make the Decatur the peruser not the pursued. The parallel wakes are very curious indeed. Would a Vessel allow another to pass them broadside within 45 yards like that and then turn away after the fact? Pretty risky to allow this. Just like the Fitzgerald and the McCain I see holes in the official narrative with this.

Not so, the Decatur could have engged if the PLAN vessel acted as if it was going to engage. Of course, Radars go active, weapons systems activate and move and the like, so yes, just like in personal self defense, a vessel does not have to actually attack iot be engaged by another. Reckless sailing could even be considered a warlike act, but apparently not in this case. As long as the Decatur felt they could avoid the PLAN ship, and it was not displaying weapons systems threats, then o h well. Now if it had been on a deliberate course to ram , then avoidance while freeing weapons system would be appropriate, I would think. However, a 450 ft vessel at 50 m is not stopped by a 5/38 gun nor would any missiles/torpedoes be useful.. This was a shouting match of 2200 tons at 20 knots....

.……..the Decatur crew got a little excitement to break up the boredom as I guarantee you this was a “Real General Quarters event”.

Even in a drill, which I’ve been through many of, that voice on the ships PA system yelling out “General Quarters, General Quarters...…….all hands man your battle stations” is a hair raising event. All my uncles experienced it “For Real” in the south Pacific in WWII. In memory of them, let me say I had 3 uncles on my dads side and 4 on my mothers side. They ALL served in the War. Most in the Navy several Army. So proud of them all. One survived being a medic on Saipan.

Support our Navy, boycott all things from China.

Too bad "our" Congress won't pass COOL (Country Of Origin Labeling).

I guess that will never happen as long as DiFi's husband makes millions off of his China connections...

It really would NOT surprise me if GQ was not set. (Even though my prior COs required a minimum special sea detail whenever the ship was U/W within 5 ship lengths of ANYTHING except a navigational buoy.)

And if no collision alarm was sounded, no one on the ship in a position of authority realized any danger, or there are a bunch of idiots running this US Naval vessel and a few more writing stories about it.

So, is this an international incident, or garbage news? What do you think?

I’m an old Grunt and know very little about US Navy procedures. It appears to be a very serious event.

I do know that it will take a while to recover and put things back in order after POSObama’s social engineering and all of his intentional harm to America on so many levels.

POSObama did everything he could to bleed America to death by a thousand cuts.

Like all arrogant bullies, China only fears strength and force. They are used to bullying all who will back down before them. They got used to Obama’s weakness. We have to stay in their face. Call their bluff every time.

I was serving in USS Caron in 1992 in the Black Sea on a Freedom of Navigation Op with Yorktown when a Lumber Carrier (Lesnoavodsk) attempted a shouldering. Thew LC was too slow so we were shouldered by Mirka SKR. Took some damage near the port Harpoon launcher. That FON Op was going from a position in International Waters through Soviet claimed Territorial Waters on a direct course to another position in International Waters. I am guessing that the recent event was similar to ours (been on the retired list for over 20 years).
