FTC complaint accuses Facebook of collecting data on children with Messenger Kids

A coalition of child and consumer advocacy groups on Wednesday accused Facebook of illegally collecting data on children with its new Messenger Kids app.

In a complaint filed with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood (CCFC) and other organizations argued that the service’s disclosures about its privacy practices are overly vague, allowing Facebook to share children’s data with third parties.

The groups allege that Messenger Kids is in violation of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) because it doesn’t ensure that the adult giving a child permission to use the app is actually the user’s guardian.

“While evidence shows that excessive social media use negatively impacts the wellbeing of children and teens, Facebook is trying to get kids hooked at the tender age of five,” CCFC’s executive director Josh Golin said in a statement. “They tell parents that Messenger Kids was designed to be safe for children, but they don’t even comply with the most basic privacy requirements of the law. The best choice for parents is clear: keep young kids away from Facebook.”

Facebook introduced the service in December, aimed at children ages 6 to 12 who are too young to create an account on the social network. The service lets children chat with other Messenger Kids users and requires a parent to set up the account for them.

The complaint says that the app’s consent mechanism is easily manipulated, making it easy for a child to bypass it and create an account without their parents’ help or for adults to create fake child accounts.

“Our own testing shows that it is not difficult to create a fake account that can approve a Messenger Kids user,” the complaint reads. “We created a brand new Facebook account for a fictional 18 year-old. We then used that account to approve a fictional Messenger Kids user. The entire process took five minutes.”

A Facebook spokesman did not immediately respond when asked for comment.

Does your school give your kids a tablet to use for their schoolwork? If so, Google is collecting data on them.

[ Facebook collecting data on kids? ]

I hope that was rhetorical because there certainly was never any doubt.

They’ll mark them from birth. Are they assigning Social Security Numbers at birth? I’ve heard that but must admit don’t know if that’s just rumor.

Eventually it will be microchips, IMHO. Or at least it seems to be trending that way.

Or that Zuckerberg is involved with those trying to make ‘1984’ come true.

yep

When I buy what was a $100 cellphone just a couple years before at Wal*Mart for less that $9 brand new and one that would have been $300 at the same time at Best Buy for $20....and they all have Google hookups built right in.

At first I was amazed at the great deal. Or so it seemed.

At that time.

My sister was adamant that she did not want her kids having their own social media or email accounts.

Off to public school, where they were issued Android tablets, which are the only accepted way to do your homework now.

Opening a gmail account is a REQUIRED part of Android set-up.

She went back and bitched to the principal and was told “Oh, well, that’s just the way they do things now”.

Sorry, Mom, you lose.

Oh, and when all homework is done through a secure Android portal pesky mom’s never get to see the homework assignments OR the textbooks.

Clever how that works.

Well, duuhhh. [not aimed at you, OP].

Facebook exists to collect data - and sell it.

People have told me about that before. I guess I need to watch it.

One movie I did not really care for at the theater (rare trip) was the 2004 version of “The Manchurian Candidate” with Denzel and several other names.

The “music” in the opening scenes (inside the troop carrier - seemed like one of those Humvee conversions) was quite annoying.

Now the movie was supposed to be a hit piece on W and Haliburton. Starred several lefties, of course, including, yes, Al Franken. (lol)

It’s one movie I’ve watched a dozen times or more, now. Lots of subtle things in the movie. The guy at the flophouse acts liked a deranged Obama worshiper fooled by the liberal media. It was the place where one of Denzel’s men lived.

Watch the movie and tell me Meryl Streep isn’t playing Hillary Clinton. She’ll never admit it, of course.

The technology is more than a stretch but that movie really grew on me. Of course there are agents and agents-provocateur and disinformation agents.

Pretty wild stuff. Thanks for that recommendation again.

Yes, know a girl who pretty much was required to have a Google laptop for high school. Paid a fee, of course. Everything was done via that machine.

Of course, I wear a tinfoil hat sometimes......

Yep. My guess is they’re paid (funded) to collect it.

Anything they gain by selling it is just icing on the cake.

And provides better walls to protect Mr. No Walls Zuckerberg.

Facebook was screaming they were innocent when Cambridge Analytica was said to be collecting data without the knowledge or consent of users.

It would appear Facebook is doing the same thing.

09/11/2001 changed everything. In a lot of ways.

Indirectly, it brought us Manchurian Candidate Barack Hussein Obama.

WHO on 09/12/2001 would have ever believed the United States citizens would accept a pro-Islam, pro-gay, anti-military, anti-law enforcement, pro-riot guy like Obama for President? I would not have believed it possible this side of the rise of Antichrist.

Bill Clinton called him a joke in 2008 (IIRC) saying “...this guy would have been getting us coffee...” meaning that Obama was barely qualified to run for coffee. And it that case, old Bill was correct.

And yet the idiots on the liberal side made him the most powerful man on Earth for 8 years.

Now, I wear my tinfoil hat shiny side out.

I tried explaining that to some coworkers once. Only after one of them read on in a news article (I didn’t know an indirect reference was there) did they give me even 1% (or 1/2 of 1%) credit.

The indoctrinaters... oops.....I mean... “educators” are either sooo complicit in the subversion of America or too STUPID to be teaching, or simply Godless Morons.

I see a public school educator and, every time, I have to wonder *which*.

Many of them are the image of Dr. Fraud.

Good list of POS Obola’s disqualifying traits.
However, add MARXIST to the list.
