Over $100K per year/salary + benefits for many Milwaukee Public School teachers - and that was a few years ago, when they were calling in sick to go and destroy the State Capitol.
Go to your local public school and look at their cars.
What are they driving? 5 to 10 year old cars?
Or is it Escalades, BMW, Lexas, Corvettes?

Depends on the state, whether teachers unions are present and the priorities of the school district. Some teachers are overpaid and underworked (unionized), some are underpaid and overworked(right to work states). A lot of school districts are bloated with overhead staff making more than the average secondary school teacher. Many of the district honchos, who do next to nothing, have salaries that in no way match their low level of effort.
About 10 yrs ago, the lady was making $52,000 a year and when she retired, it was with full pay. I do not know what she taught.. it was the wife of a fellow employee with my husband.
There is a retired coach living behind me and he retired in good shape.. the lady next door retired from Phys Ed teaching... she actually retired...does nothing, hires anything she needs done.
Personally, I just know the lady with $52,000 ....it was said they did retire with full pay. I am not a teacher though.. google it.

any professional worth his/her salt should be expected to have four or more years of advanced schooling...but I guess you have some point to make...

All? Disagree. Some states have lower salaries like Montana. But NY and AK, HS Teachers can earn over $80K. In NY the average is $72K. Not bad for working about 3/4 what most people work.
And while starting teachers have to put in a lot of extra work building lesson plans, teachers with a few years pull out the stuff from previous years for most lessons. Much easier.
I respect teachers, but Not all deserve that. My father use to say there were two kinds of teachers, those that loved kids, and those that wanted summers off. He was Professor of Elementary Education at a major university.
I think a third selection could be, those that want to coach.
We are in the same zone with teachers as we are with sexual assault victim. You can’t question them. Well sorry, many teachers are not very good. Look at how we rank among other countries.
Just an FYI, my mother was a teacher and then guidance counselor, and my wife was a teacher. So I have been around a few.
Maybe they should act like humans in order to be treated as humans. Look up the teacher protests at Wisconsin state capital.
Get rid of the arbitrary credentialing requirements, get rid of tenure, and voucher the schools. Let teachers compete in the open market like any other professionals. Good teachers will do well, possibly better than now. Bad teachers will be forced into other occupations, and will mostly end up better off as well; in the current system, too many are enticed by artificial pay and benefit structures into staying in jobs for which they are, at best, mediocre.
My daughter, on the other hand, went to a modestly priced college from out of state and accumulated little debt. She is also doing well in her profession and will have her debt paid off shortly.
They retire well and often retire young for a very long time. They make between enough and plenty. Some make way too much. They often do a bunch of crap after screwl but get a lot of time off. Heck, they even get vacations now during the screwl year some places.

The only direct info/experience I have is in OK where the retirement is 2% x yrs of service x high 5 year average salary. My wife retired in 2009 and was making mid-$40K salary after 29 years as a speech pathologist in the school system. So her multiplier was 58% of $42K = ~$25K less the always increasing health insurance premium she pays. The only state benefit is that $10K is exempted from state income tax. IOW, her retirement check has slipped lower every year. Even combining her Social Security check amount into the total does not get her back to 100% of what she made while teaching.
Ditch the unions and they will command much more salary.
Agreed, I know cops and firemen that barely pull in $3000 a month before taxes.
For the most part, teachers are doing good.
Teachers = Democratic Socialists of America.
And before the “that while schools in session” crowd gets here ...... I like homeschooling !
