It seems that Ford just assumed Leland would sign on to support the fake “narrative” and did not bother even to use a 3rd party friend such as Monica McLean to check out in advance what Leland would be willing to say. We are very very lucky for this bit of carelessness in the plotting.
Also, I don’t think Ford/McLean ever thought through the possibilities of public spotlight etc. I suspect they thought (and DiFi staff probably told them) that a secretive accusation would be enough to get the nomination withdrawn. That would have worked with most previous Republican presidents, but fortunately not with POTUS Trump!!
