‘300 Russian spies unmasked’ by Dutch hacking revelations

The GRU military intelligence agency was accused yesterday of making the largest intelligence blunder in Russian history after the Dutch hacking revelations appeared to result in the outing of more than 300 spies.

Aleksei Morenets, one of the four Russian operatives accused of attempting to hack into the chemical weapons watchdog in the Netherlands, was identified in a leaked Russian car ownership database.

Morenets’ Lada was registered in 2011 to a Moscow address that is believed to house a GRU barracks and specifically unit 26165, its notorious cyberespionage operation accused of attempting to hack into the Office for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and of carrying out intrusions on agencies around the globe.

The website Bellingcat searched for other vehicles registered to the same address and produced a list of 305 individuals aged from 27 to 53. The leaked list includes the names, dates of birth and mobile phone numbers of the apparent spies.

Alexander Gabuev, a senior fellow and chair Russia at the Asia-Pacific programme in the Carnegie Moscow Centre, tweeted that it was the largest intelligence blunder in modern Russian history. He wrote that the Russian Traffic Authority was notoriously corrupt and so it was no surprise that its database had been available for purchase on the black market since the 1990s.

The Russkies have always been penny-wise and pound-foolish. They send their best and brightest to spy on Western Countries, instead of going into business or working to make Russia better.

This is just like the old Soviet Union. They're a 3rd world $hithole, with a large army and delusions of grandeur.

A decade or so the entire US humint asset base in Iran (such as it was) was disclosed in error when a single idiot did a “reply all” to a asset mailing list, which existed for reasons that are unclear.

And utterly suicidal.

That’s the story, anyway.

It looks like many people, in many countries, can’t really grasp the full consequences of computer technology.

". . . is believed to house a GRU barracks and specifically unit 26165"

The same folks believe Trump is a Russian pawn who had hookers piss on the bed in his Moscow hotel room.

Why is this being announced publicly now? If the people involved in very recent activities were outed this way, perhaps it would have been useful to shut up about it and enjoy unravelling more.

Most likely it's disinformation...part of a broader campaign to gaslight the Russian Federation being waged by MI6, the same folks who ran an intelligence operation against candidate Donald Trump.
