It was under the Barack Obama administration that bureaucrats in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms tried to ban ammunition for AR-15 rifles, which are among the most commonly used in America.
The move failed when intense resistance developed from majorities in the House and the Senate.
But the details of that campaign have remained hidden over the intervening years, and Washington watchdog Judicial Watch says the secrecy needs to end.
The organization filed a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit against the BATF over about 1,900 pages of records regarding the proposed reclassification that would have banned certain types of AR-15 ammunition.
The proposed change in the technical definition would have moved AR-15 into a category of ammunition reserved for armor-piercing, which is much more restricted that ordinary ammunition.
Judicial Watch filed the lawsuit after the agency failed to respond to a May 14, 2018, FOIA request for the 1,900 documents about the Obama administrations AR-15 ammo ban efforts. The documents include ATF talking points about the Armor Piercing Ammunition Notice of Proposed Rulemaking and other records discussing ammunition classification, Judicial Watch said.
Its the latest in a three-year effort to get documents from the ATF. The cache of documents was uncovered during separate litigation over the ammunition ban.

Great tip. Thank.
Hate that criminal POS.
How about Fast n Furious while we’re at it?
A lot of things are “under investigation” but nothing ever happens. Fast and Furious is still hanging out there un-adjudicated.
I try not to drive fast when I’m furious. The other F&F? Nothing will ever come of it. YUGE “D” protecto ring around those POS perps.
One ring to rule them all...
I include Tom (President of JW) in my prayers because that man is doing the LORDS work. I wish my credentials were enough to work for that man.
Can people just make their own armor piercing bullets?
It was in March 2015 that more than 200 members of Congress wrote to former ATF Director B. Todd Jones to express their serious concern that the proposal to reclassify the ammunition types as armor-piercing may violate the Second Amendment by restricting ammunition that had been primarily used for sporting purposes.
200 dumb asses. Sporting purpose has nothing to do with the Second Amendment. The sporting purpose verbage of the law was inserted by Senator Dodd who imported it wholesale from Hitler’s Third Reich gun law.
;-)
Just wrap some tinfoil around the slugs and you’re good to go.
The Finns found "Molotov cocktails" moderately effective against Soviet Tanks.
Don't hear much about that anymore.
Good find.
Man Obama/Holder were evil, corrupt, a$$holes. Thank God for Trump!!!
The batfelmnop needs to be eliminated in its entirety after the doj is sterilized. Couple more years, at least.
I think the big worry here is that despite the Presidency of Donald J. Trump, we have a BATFE that is most likely staffed with the same $hit as when Obola was p-resident. I know Trump has an overflowing plate, but he needs to give some direction here to the BATFE to comply forthwith to JW’s FOIA request. Trump needs to use JW to help him “smoke out” the Obola leftovers. I don’t know how he can expect to be completely successful allowing these people to remain in their jobs working at crossed purposed to what he wants to accomplish.
Hell there’s probably still some clintoon holdovers there. You know how them gubmint jobs are.
As did the Hungarians briefly in 1956.
“I include Tom (President of JW) in my prayers because that man is doing the LORDS work. I wish my credentials were enough to work for that man.”
And pray for his staff as well. They put several really excellent folks out on FNC describing in excruciating detail what they are finding as a result of their FOIA lawsuits. There was a time when I wanted Trump to make Fitton AG, but I realize now he’s much more effective where he is, unfettered by and direct government restriction on his activities.
Well since the AR15 can be chambered for something like 53 different calibers this was a pretty stupid thing to try.
