Willing to go to the mat: How Trump and Republicans carried Kavanaugh to the cusp of confirmation
washingtonpost ^ | October 5 at 9:09 PM | Philip Rucker + 3 others

Addressing thousands at a boisterous rally in Mississippi, Trump relied on his own visceral sense of the moment and mocked Christine Blasey Ford for gaps in her memory, directly impugning the accuser’s credibility.

Establishment Republicans initially reacted with horror. But Trump’s 36-second off-script jeremiad proved a key turning point toward victory for the polarizing nominee, White House officials and Kavanaugh allies said, turbocharging momentum behind Kavanaugh just as his fate appeared most in doubt. . . .

“How did you get home? ‘I don’t remember,’ ” Trump said, reenacting Ford’s hearing. “How did you get there? ‘I don’t remember.’ Where is the place? ‘I don’t remember.’ How many years ago was it? ‘I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know.’ ”

The riff lasted less than a minute, but had lasting ramifications. The senators whose votes Kavanaugh was wooing said they were aghast at the president’s rally-stage behavior. But Kavanaugh allies saw a clear benefit: An argument by the president that bucked up Kavanaugh, discredited Ford and became a clarion call for conservatives.

More than two dozen Trump supporters interviewed at the president’s campaign rally Thursday in Minnesota said they wish he had not gone after Ford, fretting that doing so was not presidential. Yet many also acknowledged the president had simply spoken aloud what many of them thought privately.

Best part of the article - “Again and again, President Trump was instructed not to do it. A cadre of advisers, confidants and lawmakers all urged him — implored him, really — not to personally attack the women who had accused Supreme Court nominee Brett M. Kavanaugh of sexual assault.

So he did it anyway”

Trump will be the stuff of legends in the future. What kind of super-power do you infuse a super-hero with to enable him to inject backbone into an invertebrate and get that former invertebrate to stand up and take a stand.

It’s nearly magical!

He just stated the obvious.

This is the kind of thing that got him elected.

He doesn’t care what others think.

He’s got no pretense.

Hope he succeeds in getting voter to toss out Democrats in the Senate and not to vote for Democrats in open House seats.

But that is the problem. Our Rino party is afraid to state the truth for fear of media backlash and has the instincts of a jellyfish. Trump is teaching them what it means to be human again and how to fight by merely stating the obvious without spineless fear. That’s how bad it’s gotten. God bless him

Reminds me of how Reagan was told by numerous aides not to tell Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall, and did it anyway, to the benefit of Berlin and freedom. I'm sure similar examples could be found in the presidencies of Jackson, Lincoln, and Teddy Roosevelt; it probably also fits the Louisiana Purchase.

Also

“Trump is never boring: it is a simple point and central to his success but is seldom given sufficient weight.

During the presidential campaign, Hillary Clinton’s supporters complained that Trump got excessive amounts of free television time, while her speeches were ignored or were given inadequate attention.

The reason was not any pro-Trump bias – quite the contrary given the political sympathies of most people in the media – but because her speeches were boring and his were not.

He has the well-developed knack of always saying something the media cannot leave alone.

An example of this is his tweeted retort this week to a claim by JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon that he could “beat” Trump in a presidential election and is tough and smarter than him.

This silly boast was not much of a news story, until Trump’s tweeted:

“The problem with banker Jamie Dimon running for president is that he doesn’t have the aptitude or ‘smarts’ and is a poor public speaker and nervous mess – otherwise he is wonderful.”

Not many politicians or journalists could put so much punching power into a single sentence.”

It was free to me when I linked and read it.

You can read a certain number of articles for free each month after which you have to pay. I don't recall what the number is but since it's early in the month you haven't hit the limit.

We need all new conservative reps:

The current ones are just too addicted to “losing, but getting the MORAL win..!”

Losing is like catnip for them, we just can’t take the risk. Just get rid of them all.

Think of it like the Khmer Rouge Child Commanders, and their clean minds.

The GOP obsession with Being Good Sports About Losing is like the terrific power of black holes, with gravity so strong not even light can escape.

Also has anyone, anyone, seen spineless Paul RINO Ryan, these last few weeks?

Talk about hiding out!!!

I always thought of him as a spineless coward.

Can’t wait to officially have a new speaker.

We’ve been through this before on FR. Many people have browsers and add-ons configured properly so these types of links are accessible. I can read it, no problem.

How many times does this need to be said?

You CANNOT alter the titles when you post an article

FR went through a massive lawsuit - and yes, one of the parties involved was the ComPost - in the late 90s over this crap.

LEARN THE RULES!

The thugs at the Compost could simply not say “the President had simply spoken aloud the facts”. Instead, they fell compelled to spin and spin, even the most obvious and undeniable truth!

He has the well-developed knack of always saying something the media cannot leave alone.

Plus, he's funny. Don't underestimate the importance of humor. Trump makes people laugh and it's a natural gift. Hillary Clinton is incapable of spontaneous humor.
