THE POWER OF A TEACHER

Yesterday, I related the story of a young man who had been labeled as "retarded," yet achieved remarkable success because of one teacher who convinced him that someone else's judgment need not become his reality. The account pointed out the importance of a healthy self-image, and the power of a vision. Today, I want to expand on that thought a bit. What was it that made the teacher in that story so different? Confidence? Experience? Expertise? No, I think it was something far more basic. Let me illustrate with another example.

Eric Butterworth tells the story of a college professor who once sent his sociology class into the Baltimore slums to take case histories on 200 boys. Based on these histories, and their previous studies of sociology, the students then evaluated each boy's likelihood of future success. In every case the prognosis was the same: "This kid doesn't have a chance."

Twenty-five years later, another professor came across that study and had his students follow up. The shocking results contradicted all accepted sociological theory. Twenty of the subjects had died, or had moved away and could not be located. Of the remaining 180, however, all but four had achieved more than ordinary success as lawyers, doctors and businessmen! What could account for this remarkable turn of events?

Intrigued, the professor investigated the matter further. Soon a consistent pattern began to emerge. Each of these men had been motivated and encouraged by a teacher. In fact, by the SAME teacher! She was much older now, but still alive and alert, so the learned scholar sought her out. "What magical formula," he asked, "had she had used to pull these boys out of the slums and into successful careers?" Her eyes sparkled as she said with a gentle smile, "It's really very simple; I LOVED those boys."

That's the real key, isn't it? As someone has said, "People don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." I have an acquaintance who wants very much to be a coach. He is knowledgeable of his sport, experienced (as a player) and credentialed as a coach. Yet he has proven to be totally ineffective at teaching and motivating young players. Why? They view him as a "bully" -- arrogant, uncaring and harsh. And the fact that they neither respect nor trust him is reflected in their performance.

Consider, on the other hand, the example of Annie Sullivan, who took on the task of training a child with multiple handicaps. In his book, THERE'S A LOT MORE TO HEALTH AND NOT BEING SICK, Bruce Larson points out that, when Ms. Sullivan began her work, her charge was little more than a "hostile, rebellious, untamed animal." With "tough love", however, Ms. Sullivan fought her way in to the girl's life and released one of the most gifted and inspirational women of all time -- Helen Keller. Larson concludes, "Each of us has the power to perform miracles of that sort, if we can begin to communicate to other people that they are important to us, and of supreme value in the sight of God."

One of the most cherished passages in the Christian scriptures (I Corinthians 13) concludes with the statement that three things -- faith, hope and love -- will last throughout eternity. "But the greatest of these," it advises, "is love." May our lives and our legacies reflect that guiding principle.

It’s a shame they didn’t give him more time off so he could go home. I hope they give him more time off next time.
But you benefit this time by having him around a couple of days to help out with a few things. :-)

Howdy, radu and Kathy! We had an excellent time I got there late as I didn’t realize how far it was from the cottages. I was following Wneighbor, thank goodness, or I’d have been lost for sure!

I didn’t shoot. There just wasn’t enough time. And it was so hot on the range, all I wanted to do was sit in the shade where a nice breeze was blowing. LOL!

Hope you’re having an excellent weekend!

Glad you had a great time even if you didn’t shoot. Can’t blame ya for wanting to stay in the shade. At least you had a breeze to help keep you cool-ish. No breeze here today, at least at the museum. There was a little storm at the farm while I was gone that knocked a chunk of tree branch down.

Had a good time at the museum today, but then I always do. LOL! It’s going to be such a downer when it closes for the winter.

Howdy, E.G.C. ((HUGZ))

How’s the weekend going so far? Did rain put a damper on your lake plans with Gizmo?

Well, we had a nice day yesterday but it’s raining right now. I understand LUV W. neck of the woods had some bad weather and that some of that area lost power for a time yesterday morning. Hopefully all is well down there for her and hubby.

It’s a shame it has to close for the winter! You definitely won’t know what to do with yourself on Saturday mornings! Of course, the way things are going...there won’t BE any winter! LOL!

Would you believe that at home we got 2 inches of rain last night1 And it’s only 69 there while it’s 76 here in the hill country. We did get a couple of showers here though....and a beautiful rainbow.

Guess I’d better head out. I have to drive back to Ft. Worth tomorrow and I’m sleepy. Didn’t get a nap today. Talk to ya tomorrow!

I think all is good at my house. I’m in east Texas right now, but my hubby didn’t say anything about power loss. He did say we got 2 inches of rain which is wonderful!

Hope you and Gizmo had a lovely time at the lake today in spite of the rain.

I saw that you’re getting rain tonight but didn’t know when it moved in. I wasn’t able to get on the computer until evening. Glad it held off long enough for you two to get out for a while.

EEK on LUV’s area getting clobbered! I hope there wasn’t hail!

There will be stuff going on periodically over the winter and I might be able to get up there a little. They’re going to put in two more toilets, and there will be things unpacked and put out, I assume. I’m at a standstill on uniforms until there’s room to hang more though.

Wow! Two inches of rain? COOL! We got a whoppin’ tenth of an inch here yesterday. LOL! Should get a decent dose next week when a cold front comes through and FINALLY gives us some fall temps.

Sleep well and have a safe trip tomorrow!
