Israel can beat Russian-supplied S-300 air shield in Syria - minister

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - An Israeli official played down on Wednesday the Russian upgrading of Syria’s air defences, saying the newly supplied S-300 missile system could be defeated by Israel’s stealth fighters and possibly destroyed on the ground.

Moscow said on Tuesday that it had delivered the S-300, a decision it took after accusing Israel of indirect responsibility for the downing of a Russian spy plane by Syrian forces as they fired on attacking Israeli jets last month.

Damascus and its big-power backer describe the advanced addition to Syria’s arsenal as a major deterrent. Israel and Washington have both voiced misgivings about the S-300 handover.

But asked in an interview if the Syrian acquisition of the S-300 would clip the Israeli military’s wings, Tzachi Hanegbi, the country’s regional cooperation minister and a non-voting member of its security cabinet, said: “Unequivocally, no.”

“The operational abilities of the air force are such that those (S-300) batteries really do not constrain the air force’s abilities to act,” he told Israel’s Army Radio.

Referring to F-35 Joint Strike Fighters that Israel began receiving from the United States over a year ago, Hanegbi said: “You know that we have stealth fighters, the best planes in the world. These batteries are not even able to detect them.”

This is an important delivery. It’ll make the Syrian military even better at shooting down the wrong plane.

and they have modifications that they have built along with us, that are not exactly what one would expect.

Watchout for whoever tries to test these on THEM or US.

it will be quite a surprise to our enemies.
Obama is not writing the procurement checks or specifications on ANYTHING any longer. and 700 PLUS billion dollars... goes a LONG way... especially with the current Commander and Chief of the armed forces.

His formal and public announcement about our Space force deployment into the final frontier, might shake some folks up, if’n they knew that perhaps some aspects are already moving forward.

my guess, based on the evidence is that there is a real “there” going on “there”

Some spy plane, eh? The Syrians shot it down, either due to incompetence (Syrian and/or Russian incompetence) or due to the fact that Russia had agreed to leave the Idlib enclave alone the day or two before, and Assad responded by shooting down the Russian clunker using the Russians' own S-200 system.

I think Amir was hinting at this when he said something like The S-300 has had a lot of modifications but let’s face it it’s not the newest.

God has blessed Israel with some of the most brilliant minds in the world and they lead the world in cyber security.

So when the S-300 were delivered, Israel's military guys just dusted off some of the 10 yrs old stuff that they already had to defeat it.

I am very sure that even without the F35, they have lots of stuff that would make it chasing ghosts as well as fetching sticks like an obedient puppy! I wouldn't be surprised if the Russian missile techs would experience a unique series of jamming whereby they suddenly see a slideshow of Putin's pictures on the screen & the Russian national anthen playing in the background, just moments before the Israeli missiles blow them up

Remember Sun Tzu’s teaching on warfare: Appear weak where you are strong, appear strong where you are weak. All warfare is based on deception.

The S-300 has had a lot of modifications but let’s face it it’s not the newest.

So which variant is it? But what ever variant it is, the entire system is tied into the Russian Command and Control in Russia, making the system operated by Russians in Russia. The Syrians just follow orders and turn the knobs and flip switches as they are told.

The system also has Russian IFF so that Russian planes will not be shot at again.

The Greek S-300 system the IAF tested against has long been obsolete - the system supplied is a different animal - especially if Russia supplies it with their 40N missiles. BTW the system covers all of Israel and most of Lebanon. When the IAF takes off in Israel, Moskva C&C will know.

He meant it’s an old system, so the modifications can only go so far. I think. It’s the latest modification but on an old system.

The designation maybe old, but the S-300 system (one or more full regiments) supplied is likely the latest variant and is a totally different beast with different missiles - perhaps even the 40N with a 60 mile range which can take out Israeli and US mil sats potentially; plus the system is tied directly to Russian Nuclear C3 C&C system in Russia. Again this is not the system the IAF has trained against.

The S-300 (PMU-2 variant using the 48N6E3 missiles, range 124 miles) will be laid out much differently than the obsolete 300 and 200 systems in tiers with each TEL having so many systems with so many missiles of different types and all of that with a different system (Pantsir-S1) to guard each TEL.

Also the Russian have supplied the near latest in jamming units (Krasukha-4) which only the US has some experience with. Any attack on these sites will have a direct Russian response - they have said.

This means that the Israelis will lose planes - the 200 system was famous for launching willi-nilli missiles long after an attack. The S-300 launches will be more timely.

I don’t think so.

The S-300 (variant) is directly linked to Russia’s Nuclear C3 C&C - so how do you figure? The hand on the button is Russian in Russia ... the Syrians just get to look at the scopes, twiddle switches, and so on.
