Susan Collins reveals she thought Kavanaugh 'perhaps needed to withdraw' after hearing Ford testify

Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins -- a key swing-vote whose dramatic floor speech on Friday assured Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation to the Supreme Court -- revealed on Sunday that she initially thought Kavanaugh "perhaps needed to withdraw" after she heard Christine Blasey Ford's "very compelling and painful" testimony.

But then, Collins said, "When [Kavanaugh] came back with a forceful denial, the anger and anguish he showed, and then the lack of corroboration, led me back to the fundamental issues to our legal system."

Both Ford and Kavanaugh testified at length in late September before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Ford alleged that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her more than three decades ago, and Kavanaugh, at times emotional and fiery, sharply denied the claim. President Trump and top White House officials had reportedly urged Kavanaugh to come out swinging at the hearing.

Speaking to CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday, Collins emphasized, "I found Ford to be heart-wrenching and compelling." But, she continued, citing the lack of any witness corroboration for Ford's account, "I don't believe Kavanaugh was her assailant." (Also speaking to CNN on Sunday, Hawaii Democratic Sen. Mazie Horono, who has previously suggested Kavanaugh did not deserve due process, called Collins' comments "insulting" to Ford.)

Polls in Maine showed that a majority of Collins' constituents wanted her to reject Kavanaugh. Instead, he was confirmed Saturday by a narrow 50-48 margin. Collins' speech immediately prompted West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin to announce his support for Kavanaugh as well, securing his confirmation.

“I have to do what I think is right," Collins said. "Over the years, the people of Maine have trusted me to exercise my best judgment. That’s what I did in the case. ... Whatever the voters that decide, but I’m going to do what I think is right..."

It is amazing that ANYONE could think that made up voice could be credible.

I stood it for only five minutes and was searching for the comfort of fingers on a chalkboard.

“Yes, I agree, and hopefully we’ll get more out of the next Congress than we did this one. Pitiful...”

I was reading a list of the Trump agenda items accomplished the other day and it is really impressive. Congress was responsible with a large amount of the list of accomplishments. They need to get credit.

I think we all went through that. Blasey Ford testified and it looked bad. A friend even remarked "We lost".

But then Kavanaugh came on, and WOW was it OBVIOUS he was hurt and angry he had been falsely impugned.

Collins may be a RINO, but she did the ABSOLUTE RIGHT THING HERE.

I agree. I'm heartened to see that she was fairminded.

Looking back now, I think Flake did the right thing, even if his motives were less than noble.

The fact is, without that investigation, we would have lost not only the vote, but in the court of public opinion, and it would have been disaster for the midterms.

Did they:

Fund the wall?

Cut funds to Planned Parenthood?

Cut funds to PBS and NPR?

Reduce any of the massive spending to member’s districts?

Will we balance the budget off Trump’s tax cut and resulting increase in revenues, or will they simply spend more?

I could go on.

What they do is trot out things to make folks think they’ve just been slaying it.

Then the big things we vitally need... NOTHING!

McConnell gets credit for the record number of judges that have been approved. What goes unsaid are the numbers of judges not approved. One took over a year to move. Seriously, one full year. What goes unsaid is the wait time for those who are nominated before being affirmed. Trump has made many appointments. They’re still not installed.

Mitch is slow-walking everything. Ryan hasn’t had a clue since day one of being selected to the leadership in the House. He did at least gather forces to pass the Tax Bill, so I’d have to moderate that comment a bit.

They’ve had two years in which they could have had their own way on anything. This is all they came up with.

We could see eight years pass, with very little truly impressive legislation being passed, if this continues.

That Tax bill was the only large piece of legislation they’ve moved in two years. On this track, we get four large bills in eight years. Does that sound good to you?

We should have had between six and ten impressive pieces of legislation by now. That’s how you roll back Leftist encroachment.

McConnell and Ryan seem perplexed to find anything of substance to do.

We’ve waited at least 30 years for some things, and probably more like 80 for others. These guys had no list ready.

Ryan: Well Mitch, what’s next?

McConnell: Oh I don’t know. What do you think?

Ryan: Oh, I don’t know. We’ll come up with something eventually...

I read this earlier in the Summer and was duly impressed. There are quite a few enacted by Congress. The President has a list of strong supporters in Congress and we need to build on that. http://www.magapill.com/

Too bad China Mac and Company destroyed Roy Moore and lost us SES-sions’ seat: a two-fer for the UniParty.

But hey, the cookie-cutters are now praising the Swamp Turtle (the same guy who also destroyed Chris McDaniel).

It’s amazing the stupidity of the people that believed every word Ford said. Chris Wallace, the biggest idiot of all.

Was Romney being two faced? I thought he said he would support Kavanaugh?
