Orville Schell, the director of the Centre on US-China Relations at the Asia Society in New York, also noted that Chinas forceful campaign had stoked suspicions about visiting academics. It is Chinas United Front Work Department which views overseas Chinese as sons of the yellow emperors, ethnic Chinese somehow belong to China. Overseas Chinese are caught in the crossfire.
Schell said he was working with a group of about 20 prominent China specialists in the US on a broad-ranging research project about Chinas influence operations.
The effect on American think tanks so far has been limited, but as Chinese philanthropy and Chinese money seek to support universities, think tanks, civil society and NGOs, there will be more influence. There is clearly some interference in our internal affairs, which is not helpful, he said.
THE CHINESE INFLUENCE CAMPAIGN
Daly also blamed Xi and Chinese officials who painted a target on the backs of the Chinese-Americans with their frequent calls on all Chinese of the diaspora to help build the rejuvenation of the great Chinese nation.
According to Schell and Daly, Beijing has markedly increased funding for the United Front organisations that sought to rally support for Xi and the party, foster uncritical attitudes towards China while silencing international critics.
It is not surprising that Beijing would pursue these goals, and the effort isnt new, but the current campaigns are better funded and more brazenly so, Daly said.
Noting that official China policies and programmes raise genuine security concerns, Daly said: How would Beijing respond if Trump summoned American students and faculty in China to contribute to the Free and Open Indo-Pacific? Beijings rhetoric and, yes, some of its overt and covert programmes, contribute greatly to the perception that Chinese scholars in the US may threaten American security.

How many “Chinese-Americans” or Chinese students in US Universities are spies? I would guess a majority of them are.
There are a lot of Chinese in my area. I haven’t noticed any of them cowering in fear.
Driving Miss Feinstein.
Oh great, a new class of “victims.”
Lost the Blacks at 12%. Lost the Hispanics at about 15-20%.
Now they’re going for the Chinese vote, at 2%.
Not the sharpest pencils in the box are they.
They aren’t cowering; you aren’t harassing.
BS story. No one outside of DC cares
They’ve bought our debt for decades and enabled a decade of 0% interest rates allowed America to borrow without consequence. Payback time is just starting. Next years interest expense will be a stunning 50% higher than 2017 thanks to rising interest rates and still-expanding budget deficits.
There’s gonna B Hell To Pay shortly when interest rates get back to even 1/2 of normal.....
And those who are not doing it voluntarily will do so under coercion.
Why did we save them from the Japanese again?
Yeah, I doubt anyone outside of W., D. C. gives a rat’s patoot.
We don’t live our lives like they do.
The Chinese will take care of themselves.
I didn’t see Hollywood mentioned.
There have been studio and other purchases recently.
I’m suspicious of visiting academics no matter where they come from.
The saying in Silicon Valley is:
Half the Chinese here are spying on us.
The other half are spying on them!
Been to Beijing. The last time I drove by UC Berkley stopped for students crossing on campus. Same as Beijing If Cal went back to affirmative action there would be 10% of the asian students on campus as now. Reason why asians don’t support affirmative action
I dont care if every seat is filled by an Asian if theyve earned the right to be there. - Then California Governor Ronald Reagan
count me in earn it or move out
These articles are ludicrous.
Authors and elites feel like America is akin to 1890 Ukraine and we are about to have a pogrom on our Jews.
What a screwed up worldview: “White people are so evil, they can just explode at any minute against their nonwhite neighbors!”
It is offensive to me.
