During an exclusive live interview with Michelle Obama on Thursdays Today show, co-host Savannah Guthrie touted the former First Ladys famous motto of When they go low, we go high. However, the NBC anchor then highlighted other prominent Democrats recently calling for the party to abandon any pretense of civility when attacking Republicans and wondered if Obamas saying still stands.
You know, and these are tough times politically, that we are living in, Guthrie lamented. After reminding viewers of the then-First Lady warning supporters at the 2016 Democratic National Convention not to go low like Republicans, the morning show host noted:
And just this week the former Attorney General Eric Holder, who worked for your husband, said the Democrats should have a new motto, When they go low, we should kick them. Hillary Clinton said, How can we be civil when our opponents are trying to, you know, take away everything we stand for?
Guthrie followed: And I just thought, what would you say now about your motto? Do you think it still stands, When they go low, we go high?
To her credit, Obama seemed to scold her fellow liberals:
Absolutely. Fear is not a its not a proper motivator. Hope wins out. And if you think about how you want your kids to be raised, how you want them to think about life and their opportunities, do you want them afraid of their neighbors? Do you want them angry? Do you want them vengeful?
The calls from Holder and Clinton for left-wing activists to continue to threaten and intimidate Republicans had not been covered by any of the broadcasts networks until Guthries question, which wasnt even critical of the remarks.

What’s wrong with you, Guthrie? The Dems did that years ago.
I would say she’s a little slow but that’s kind of redundant with being a “newsie”.
Oh please oh please drop all pretext of being civil dems, I kinda want to see Trump to break Reagan’s 1984 record and the resulting liberal head explosions on election night 2020 should be visible from the ISS.
I continue to believe that the mid-terms will go badly for the Democrats.
They will then abandon the political process (”It’s not working”)
Then they will take a page from von Clausewitz and “pursue politics by other means”.
They really have no other options.
But this will (again) play into the hands of Trump who is (I believe) getting ready to use military courts of justice to pursue people for sedition and treason. That sort of action will outrage the media. But if the country is rocked by violent mobs in the cities who clearly want to overthrow the government ... military courts of justice start to make a lot of sense. Have a nice day, Hillary, you’re probably first in line.
Yes, that was going to be my response also.
Can’t abandon a position you haven’t held for over half a century.
After the 1968 elections, the Democrat Party went off the deep end. They’ve sunk lower and lower since.
Can you say Mariana Trench? ;-)
Yes, and you knew I could.

I don’t understand the question.
Dims, progressives, liberals, Marxist are inherently uncivil. Violence is their MO.
The only question that should be asked now is when do we start shooting them?

I agree. The problem, though, is that once it gets to that level it is bad for all of us. OTOH, I’ve said for years that there is no human solution to our dilemma and the only real solution will be to hope the phoenix is better than what became the ashes it rose out of. i.e. it will burn down, one way or another. The only question is, is it just another sucky event like WWII, or is it the apocalypse?
To get to a point where our leaders are willing to do what is necessary to fix it, it has to get really, REALLY bad. And if they refuse to step up to the plate, it means it will get even worse than that.
Democrats also want to inflame and anger in their base to incite violence and protests and to motivate them to go to the polls and vote in November but they overplayed their hand using these tactics during the Kavanaugh hearings and voters are angry
This new campaign is an attempt to fake civility while simultaneously inciting voters to action using hate and anger to motiveate
Very clever.
Already did.

The last time I watched Guthrie she was interviewing Carrie Fisher, and Fisher was relating that she and Harrison Ford had an affair while making Star Wars. Guthrie exclaimed, “That’s so wonderful” or something to that effect. Carrie was trying to say that it made her uncomfortable since Ford was married and she said “I wasn’t raised that way.”
I wonder what Guthrie’s husband thought about his wife saying that.
