Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D should remember what happened to Senator Tom Daschle after considering a Presidential run for 2004 when Hilliary was still also considering 2004. Losing a close election plus anthrax.

She's way behind in her reelection bid, so this rings of sincerity in a way that most Demwit posturing never does. Kudos. Oh, but still, buh-bye. Thanks ding_dong_daddy_from_dumas.

Berg did not make any stupid statements on the level of Mourdock and Akin, but he failed to distinguish himself enough that the fallout was enough to swing an otherwise close race in Heitkamp's direction.
She has been running for statewide office almost non-stop since we moved away (1988) and has near total name recognition. Rick Berg was a one term congressman hardly known outside of Cass County.
Cass County, home to Fargo, the state's largest city, is known as "Imperial Cass" by much of the rest of the state. ObaMao actually carried the county by 7% in 2008 when the state voted for McCain by a margin of 9%.
Romney fared a little better four years later, winning the state by 20%, but just under 3% in Cass County. Point of the matter is that being a politician from Fargo carries a certain stigma for statewide office.
Cass County has elected a lot of governors, but not from Fargo. A smallish city in the center of the county, Casselton (population 2500) has the distinction of being home to FIVE governors to Fargo's ZERO.

I should add that Kevin Cramer, who is running against Heitkamp this time has a few more advantages over Berg, namely:
- He is from Cass County, but not Fargo. His hometown Kindred (population 750) is almost on the Richland County line and doesn't carry the big city stigma.
- He is a two term congressman, not one. Plus, he is more conservative (Tea Party wing) than Berg (GOPe wing), which is a big plus in a mostly rural state.
- He has the distinction of graduating from both a Lutheran and a Catholic college. These brands of Christianity cover about 70% of the state's population.

One more thing to like about Cramer from his Wikipedia profile:
In July 2018, a spokesman for the political network organized by the Koch brothers announced that they would not financially support Cramer's campaign because the brothers viewed Cramer as insufficiently supportive of free trade and fiscal conservatism, and because Cramer held other views inconsistent with theirs.
BTW, he is also a THREE term congressman, not TWO.

Dem senator Heitkamp slams Clinton call to abandon civility with GOP That's the sound of desperation as the 'blue wave' detours down the electoral sewer.
