This could be a bluff to get Trump to stop criticizing NATO. If so, it's not going to work. But if they are serious about replacing NATO with a "European Defence Union", cue that video of Putin laughing.

The concept of a “European Union Army” would sound scary, except when one remembers that it would be made up of Europeans.

Merkel and Putin are allied and pipelined up via natural gas. It’s Poland and countries that genuinely view Russia as a threat that rely on NATO most and pay up.

Trump should ask when they are ready so we can close the US bases in Germany. The impact on their economy would be huge.

The EU getting its army before Britain has actually left is bad enough. But look for collective security to come with more requirements to take Muslim “refugees” too.

On the bright side, good for them: let’s not waste another dime defending Europe. Demobilize all our assets and bring them home. Let the Euroweenies foot the bill since they want to. They may have to give up some socialism.

The main partner (Germany) in this “European Defense Union” is so unprepared and unequipped that its soldiers paint broomsticks black to resemble rifles for exercises, for lack of proper equipment. Not even kidding on this.

Hitler would cry at the sight of this pathetic Fourth Reich.

Kind of like the Central Powers of WWI, except now the Turks aren’t over in their own territory... they’re more evenly distributed throughout.

GERMAN Defence Minister Frau Ursula von der Leyen says the structures for a European Defence Union have been “activated”, and also hopes to develop a system that tells Europeans when to use their “forces”.

Germany's governing Frauenausschuss has grand delusions...

What's wrong with the Bundeswehr?

Bartels pointed to "big gaps" in personnel and equipment. At the end of 2017, no submarines and none of the air force's 14 large transport planes were available for deployment due to repairs.

Other equipment, including fighter jets, tanks and ships, was outdated and in some cases not fully operational because of bad planning or a lack of spare parts. Some air force pilots were unable to train because too many aircraft were being repaired.

Soldiers have experienced increasing levels of stress and there was a lack adequate leadership due to some 21,000 vacant officer posts.

The report said the government needed to pursue reforms "with greater urgency" and increase defense spending.

A lack of funding and inefficient management structures and planning were behind the problems.

Germany has cut defense spending since the end of the Cold War. In 2017, it spent about 1.2 percent of its economic production in 2017 on the armed forces, which is below the 2 percent target.

Germany's lack of military readiness 'dramatic,' says Bundeswehr commissioner

The whole thing is a farce. There isn’t the slightest chance Russia intends to invade the EU. The EU Army is a joke. NATO an outdated defense pact is doing all it can to expand east in an offensive manner. And Europe is being overrun by moslems, arabs, afghans and africans.

It’s all a big joke.
